Who's you favourite detective ?

Do you have a favourite fictional detective? Are they female or a male? And who's your favourite TV/film detective?Anyone like Dr.Fu Man Chu? Anyone heard of him?

Just to 'localise' this.Many of the covers of 'The Saint' books were created by Norman Lumsden, latterly J R Hartley of Yellow pages fame. He was also Benjamin Britten's favourite bass - he created roles specifically for him-, and lived, until his death at the fine age of 95 in 2001, on Cawdor Crescent, Hanwell

I've been giving some thought to my own questions. My favourite detectives from stage, screen, radio and fiction are Charlie Chan, Dr FU Manchu and The Saint by Leslie Charteris Yin. Monsieur Hercule Poirot as a close fourth.

The murderer in Columbo is nearly always a cocky, middle aged and rich white male. If one of them is in the plot, it's usually him.

Columbo. I just love the way he lulls - often amusingly - the murderer into thinking he's a nothing but a bumbling fool, whilst the actuality is the polar opposite. The programme pioneered the concept of the howcaught'em rather than the traditional whodunnit - the first twenty minutes or so is always devoted to showing us murderer's motivation, as well as the killing itself.

The Saint is still pretty good(and for nostalgia value). Anyone remember Hawk with Burt Reynolds?

Favourite bobby# is a radio one. Inspector James McLevy of the Leith Constabulary (based on a real character called,Inspector James McLevy but with storylines by David Ashton). Brian Cox is fabulous in the role.

Sherlock Holmes, then Father Brown followed by the very few stories that the late Douglas Adams wrote about Dirk Gently.

Actually the series was called Public Eye and the character was named Frank Marker.

Sherlock Holmes for me Gerry.I also used to enjoy a tv series from the 70's called Marker which was about a down at heel, world weary but honourable gumshoe who lived in Windsor. Expertly and superbly played by Patrick Burke I believe.
