Raising money for charity

Just read the article on the front page about politicians sleeping rough for charity and it made me think about all these fundraising activities which go on. Instead of running marathons or sleeping in boxes, why don't people do something which is useful to society instead. For example: Weeding old people's gardens, cleaning their houses, painting unsightly walls, removing graffiti, picking up litter etc etc?

I agree with Gerry. If you are serious about charitable giving, the best way is a standing order, gift aided.

This ain't about sleeping rough, but about charity collection.  We've recently had a few strange people ringing our door bell asking for money for charity, all charities we haven't heard of. I know I should ask for IDs but feel embarrassed by having to suggest. We refuse politely by saying we give to a few named charities, but don't give cash to front door callers.

If people can raise money in support of others by setting themselves a challenge, like running 10k, then wonderful. It's hardly 'aimless' Penny. I have two friends running the London Marathon for charity I commend rather than condemn their efforts.

Oh I see. I admire the 'Race for Life' kind of charitable thing but they could get a double whammy by not just running an aimless 10k but by being sponsored to do useful things instead.

Doing community services like helping older people and other charitable things were more likely to happen in the 70’s and 80’s when the younger generation were more thoughtful about other people.

Wasn't sure I understood your point Tony? I meant that laudable as it is to sleep in a box, why not combine the efforts you're making by doing something useful?

I'm all for charity for old people. I'd go further by abolishing income tax and community charges for anyone over 80. We octogenarians deserve it after the hardships of wars we've been through.
