Cafe Rosetta closes.

Its always sad to see a cafe/restaurant close. Especially Cafe Rosetta in St John's Parade(Mattock Lane) or Ealing Dean as the district is known, opposite St John's Church - its been open about twenty or so years - I had the occasional fry-up breakfast there. I wonder what's replacing Cafe Rosetta? Sad really.

Walked past St John's Parade to get my newspaper and had a little butcher's hook at the newly decorated ex-Cafe Rosetta. Its looking good and there's a sign in the papered-up window saying:  Grand Opening 17/03/2014!So its goodbye Cafe Rosetta - hello Amalfi Caffe!

St John's Parade by St John's Curch in Mattock Lane is a true neighbourly local little string of shops and its our local 'corner shop' parade. There is a green grocer, a newsagent, a pharmacy(very handy for the nearby Health Centre), a uni-sex hairdresser, a tailor and dry cleaners, a 'Hoover' repair shop, a cafe, a costume jewellery shop - now all we need is a betting shop! And all the shopkeepers are friendly and efficient. We've been using the shops for neigh-on fifty years! Long may they flourish.

The Hoover repair shop is one of Ealing's 'treasures', great service from a really nice bloke!

It deffo was in "An Education", I asked last time I was in there having a cuppa and chips. The guy had clippings on the wall/ got out a photo album of stills. Sad to see it go but good if it'll be replaced by something offering a similar service. The Hoover repair chap on same parade also seems to have been there for ages, got some spongey filter off him about a year ago and he appeared to be busy with orders that day...

You're right Nigel, the 'pong' of gas is enough to put one off their kedgeree. The good news is that after the gas supply fault has been rectified, the road and pavements immediately around Cafe Rosetta will be improved such that there will be more spacious pavement space and much more room for pavement tables and umbrellas. At least that was the original plan, before the gas mainpipe became suspect. We shall see.

Have to say Gerry that I wouldn't want to eat anywhere around St. John's Parade at the moment.The stench of the gas permeating up though the ground is still very strong and enough to put me off a 'nice bacon butty'.

"...Not a good time to take over and open up a new venture."I'm not so sure about that Diane. Russell Norman tells that many new restaurants/cafes fail these days, but a few are successful. I know St John's Parade is a bit 'out of the way', but so are The Walpole and Charlotte's Place - they are really successful and aren't in 'Main Street' locations. I hope Amalfi Caffe succeeds if and when it opens.

I ran past there this evening funnily enough.  Those roadworks for the ongoing gas issues? are a complete pain and block most of the Parade.  The Cafe door was open so I had a nose at the re-furb.  Nice wallpaper but that's all I could see to be honest.  Not a good time to take over and open up a new venture.  Let's hope the mess is finished soon.

It has a new owner and I believe they are planning to re-open it as the Amalfi Cafe. I hope the new business will do well but I'm also sad to see the Cafe Rosetta go as it was an old fashioned, reasonably priced, traditional "caff". It was used as a location in some episodes of Only Fools and Horses and in the film "An Education" set in the 1960's.
