Best fish n chips

Anyone recommend a really good fish n chip shop? If you had the choice between Kerbisher and Malt (ealing bdy) & the chippy by Acton twn tube (next to Sains. Local) - which one?

Thanks for the heads up about the puds Tracey I bought some at Iceland in Hammersmith yesterday. I never usually go into an Iceland. Never heard of Tiddy Dols( interesting name) but by the accounts I have read it seemed an interesting place.

West Ealing Iceland sells the puds Keith, the ribs used are bacon ribs most Irish butchers sell them, do either of you remember the Tiddy dols in Shepherds market in Mayfair ? Proper English fayre mmmmm.

Not had the ribs Tracey but I make boiled bacon and cabbage one in a while. Are the Holland's puds in an Iceland anywhere local do you know.? If you go into some mediterrraen/ north African style grocers they sometimes sell Vimto imported from the middle east and it is just like the old stuff, nice and thick and syrupy an not like the incipid thin stuff they sell at Tesco's etc. It is a massive drink in the middle east and is used in dry countries for festivals etc. They may also put a little yeast in it I suppose because it is chock full of sugar and fruit juice ;-0

I make it with the cheese Keith, some tines I add finely chopped spring onions, did you ever have cabbage and bacon ribs Keith ?  Also Iceland do Hollands puddings in a bag of 4, just wish I could find savoury ducks and coltsfoot rock down here, maybe we three should join forces and open a "proper northern" eatery

Jack, yes I can 'judge' based on (disappointing) past experience. Much the same as my former favourite Indian takeaway which changed hands and went downhill faster than a lead brick off a cliff, still the same two years later.Which is why I asked if it had improved or changed hands.

Nigel I don't think you can judge a place if you haven't used it for over 2 years the batter on the fish is very crisp .What really annoys me on here is when people start talking about other things other than what the question was why not start a new thread

Noddin(g) pudding is an old Lancs. dish my mam used to make. It's mash potatoes mixed with flour and butter, salt and white pepper and baked in a pie dish until it forms a golden crust and is delicious. Simple to make. Can add cheese(Lancashire of course) too if you wish

On the contrary Tracey, I welcome new and different ways of cooking - either way, I love black puddings and good old fashioned pies - I eat anything that moves.

Steak and kidney puds( baby's head!)another delicacy very hard to find down here. Also fish scollops. Meat and potato pis can be bought at Plum Duff bakery in Chiswick. Morrison's do one too but the pastry is awful. Might try the microwave job on the puds Tracey...anyone heard of noddin pudding?

I was raised on bury puddings, savoury ducks, meat an tatter pies and vanillas, unfortunately when dad (a manchunian) passed away so did my supply of all the afore mentioned treats, I used to buy the bury puddings from waitrose until I discovered big bags of black puddings in the refrigerated section at Makro if I can manage to hide them from my kids, and their respective spouses they freeze wonderfully, both Keith and Gerry will probably cringe but have you tried microwaving them ?

Nothing to do with fish n' chips but as regards Lancashire food I have just bought a lovely chunk of Garstang Blue (which is a creamy Lancashire blue cheese) from Sainsbury's and it is delicious. I will have it for supper with oatmeal crackers and cherry tomatoes, washed down with a pint of Moorehouse's( Burnley) Pendle Witches Brew( a nutty,fruity delightful ale). It's almost like being back  home, what with the weather and all....

Each to their own I guess, I have never had a really good portion of fish and chips from King's; the batter has always been soggy each time that I have been there. Admittedly that last time was a couple of years ago, has it improved in recent times or changed hands?

Kings Fish Bar in Northfields Ave. near Tescos  best fish and chips for me all freshly cooked and very reasonably priced.On Mondays to Fridays from 11am to 4pm special offer for OAPs a portion of fish and chips mushy peas all for £2.99

Keith, in Poulton(actually Hardhorn Village) there was a fish'n chip shop run by the Senior family and every evening(except Sundays) there was a long queue outside - it was a well known fish'n chip shop and people would motor from miles around to shop there.Yes, that's the way we prepare black pudding - we never fry it.

And from me!My best mate from college days lives in Bolton-le-Sands (twixt Morecambe and Carnforth) and his local chippy is awesome with huge pieces of fish and amazing chips all fried in daily fresh dripping.Nowt like it down here.

Eh up Gerry...Poulton -le-Fylde? On of my oldest friend's family used to run the post office in Poulton in the 70's. If ever you saw a blue Robin Reliant being driven around it was his dad driving it. His eyesight wasn't good enough to pass a car driving test and he had a motorbike license from before his eyes went a bit wonky. Have you ever had a pint in the Golden Ball? Had a lovely pint of pump Tetley's in those days. We used to have many a (underage!)pint in there before going for a night out in Blackpool. Happy days indeed!PS.Waitrose do a very good black pudding from Bury (they are called Bury's)and are better cooked whole and lighty steamed for about 15 mins which is the traditional way. Nice and fluffy this way. I couldn't believe it when I moved to London that they fried black pudding in slices, nor could I wrap my head around putting a pie in a polythene wrapper and no meat and potato pies??? Heresy...!

So you're from sunny Preston Keith - I always felt there was sumwat good about you. For my sins, I married a lass from Lancashire(the Fylde coast actually) and when regularly visiting her parents and relatives we always, but always used to try the chippies of Fleetwood, St Anne's and Poulton-le-Fylde. They used to do black puddings too - I'm salivating just at the thought of Lancashire grub!Ps: We're still happily married after 50+ years and she still cooks a tasty hot pot!

No argument here Gerry...I always find the batter lighter in texture and colour and crispier. Sadly many of the chippies in Preston where I am from are now Indian or Chinese takeaways or chicken and chips style places. Sign of the times and of changing demand I suppose but you can still get great fish and chips there. The pies are much nicer too(fresh and not in a wrapper) and there tends to be more choice in most chippies than down here.

Interesting to see how various people like different fish'n chip cooking. When I worked, I used to be sent to all corners of the UK and I usually tried differing fish'n chips from each region of Britain - they varied greatly but I think the best(for my palate anyway) was always from Lancashire.

Their kebabs are wonderful, their chips equally good but their fish is frozen and 'sloppy' when cooked. That said their calamari are excellent. I'll stick to Andy's.

Golden Chip is fab. Decent sized portions, cooked to order if you want, as well as looking after their regulars brilliantly!Good cycle parking too...a relatively new bike stand is next to the shop!

KeithThe Saveloys are still good.Andy, the current owner, is the cousin of Mario (who took over Munson's) and who ran it for years having, in turn, taken over the business from his father.The quality has remained consistent and, except at very busy times, everything is cooked to order. it means that you have to wait a little longer but the freshness 'wins through'.

Golden Chips on Boston Rd is very good. I call them first and have them take the skin off the fish( like what it ought to be). They will also make potato scallops and their home made fish cakes are superb. It's a little more expensive but as a treat fish and chips are great and if it costs a pound more it's worth it for quality. Nigel, I used to go to Andy's when there was a chap who was a body builder behind the jump (no, I didn't go there for that reason!)and he the place sold the only edible saveloys (this post is getting dodgy!) that I have ever had in London. I haven't used the place since but take your recommendation.

Andy's at the top of Leighton Road, Ealing.Have been going there for over 30 years and wouldn't go anywhere else for fresh 'chunky' fish and crispy, fluffy chips.
