Mattock Lane/St John's Parade road closed.

Mattock Lane just south of St John's Church and environs is closed. I walked to the newsagents shop at St John's Parade and found that set of roads is completely blocked and major digging and earth moving happening and traffic diversion signs in place. There were many Brit Gas and sundry other heavy duty trucks and a strong smell of gas was present. Be warned, its going to be like that for some days yet.

Whilst I was in St John's Parade buying my evening newspaper, I spoke to the nice Sikh propietor newsagent, his neighbour the tailor and the pleasant greengrocer - they are very pleased that the road is now clear and normal - a good result.  Oh and the highways maintenence people have completed the pavement widening so that augurs well for the new cafe called Amalfi-Caffe in St John's Parade. Happy news all round.

I'm pleased to say that the major gas leak and heavy digging at St John's Parade/Mattock Lane is now repaired and clear and traffic is now flowing freely. Our little parade's shop keepers are pleased that their own small manor is now theirs again and all is safely gathered in - cheers!

It's a bit like the major leak (although small compared to Mattock Lane) that we had on Boston Road. The gas escaped into the sewers and the electricity ducts (not good). The smell of gas lingered for weeks.

I've just returned home from my usual daily walk to St John's Parade/Mattock Lane, where I was told by our worthy newsagent there that the major road and earthworks will continue for another 8 weeks. The newsagent showed me the official letter stating same. While I was idling the time at the shops, a Brit Gas official was poking his gas detector probe into the letter boxes of the closed shops nearby testing the atmosphere. The distinct smell of gas still prevails.

Shops are now open. Some of  the pavement will remain fenced off, apparently.

Passed by on way to the shops and the smell of gas was just as strong as on Mon. Its busy now with earth movers etc - very messy - avoid.

There is still a very strong smell of gas here and a lot of vans.  Didn't pass by slowly enough to see if anything was being done though!

There was a major gas leak Gerry made the front page here.Must have been serious as even The Ealing Gazette spotted it :-)
