PAVEMENTS ARE FOR PEDESTRIANS - 7
Wednesday, January 15, 2014 http://www.livingstreets.org.uk/pavements-are-for-pedestrians-says-living-streetsLiving Streets’ comment in response to ongoing debate around responsible pavement cycling.Living Streets’ Chief Executive, Tony Armstrong, said: "Pedestrians and cyclists share many concerns on our streets, not least a woeful lack of priority and funding from Government to make cycling and walking much safer. Living Streets campaigns on many issues, such as 20 mph speed limits and improved street design, which would benefit and enhance the safety of both groups of road users. "However, there is no benefit in enhancing the safety of one vulnerable road user to the detriment of another, when what we need is a concerted effort to reduce harm from collisions with motorised traffic."We know from our supporters that many people feel threatened and unsafe by pavement cycling, particularly those who are more vulnerable such as disabled people, and people with sight or hearing impairments. “Pavement cycling is illegal and Living Streets will continue to vigorously campaign to ensure anti-social and illegal behaviour is not tolerated."In 2012, 51% of fatalities on London’s streets were pedestrians and nationally 16 pedestrians are killed or seriously injured every day. They are far and away the most vulnerable road users and Living Streets will continue to campaign for measures to allow us all to walk our streets as safely as possible.”For any media enquiries, please contact the Living Streets press office on 020 7377 4914, or email info@livingstreets.org.uk.For any out of office hours enquiries, please call 07545 209865.LISTEN TO THE BBC's "Radio 4 PM" INTERVIEW with Tony Armstrong Chief Executive of Living Streets and Roger Geffen of the National Cyclist Touring Charity (CTC) on 17th January: http://www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/b03pmkb3 31.56 mins - 37.20 mins – or read the full transcript at PAVEMENTS ARE FOR PEDESTRIANS – 8
