Fight for our Hospitals

This octogenarian has said it before and says it again. The proposals made with regard to our Hospitals is unbelievable. WE MUST FIGHT ON TO SAVE OUR A AND E'S. 6,0000 people have not got it wrong ..but sadly the perpetrators of the whole diabolical , thoroughly misconceived proposals HAVE. My letter to the Gazette a while back says it all for clear thinking people. Beryl Bashford

I couldn't agree more. I have been in A&E when there have been drunks in there demanding constant attention and also drunk teenagers who are probably underage drinkers. Both times I have been there recently these teenagers have had knife wounds as well. There is so much more money (or credit) around now compared to when I was a teenager.

I'd be very happy to see, as a starting point, people who end up at A&E through being falling-down drunk being charged for their care. If you can spend 100 quid on booze of a Saturday night, then you can cough up for those who have to pick up the pieces and mop up the sick.

The NHS is a problem which gets greater with the ageing population. It is and will be an increasing burden on the public.  The main solution imo, is for those people who choose a lifestyle which is unhealthy and unsocial to pay more NHS insurance ie:- those who are too fat, those who choose to smoke, those who choose to drink too much alcohol and all those people who take drugs and burn the candle at both ends. These are bold steps but is there a political party brave enough to implement these measures? One thing is certain, the NHS cannot continue in its present form.

The NHS cannot continue in its present form. With an ageing population and a massive sense of entitlement among 'customers', who take no responsibility for their own health, certain that the state will deal with their problems, it's become a bottomless pit.There has to be some rationalisation and if this means concentrating services in specialist clinics, then that's what needs to be done.

The lack of staffing in hospitals is leading to many people being sent home without having had enough physiotherapy and walking assistance to get them properly mobile first.The co-ordination in care is just not there and is very often not set up before they leave. Day Care Centres which are fully accessible for those with less mobility have been closed.  Respite care cut.The squeezing and cuts and targets can lead to what has happened in so many hospitals which are now under special measures - lack of basic care and people being dropped off waiting lists.  Good systems and teamwork can be wrecked and staff morale ruined and a bullying culture can prevail.

As another octogenarian I'm fully with you on saving our hospitals. Last year I had a crucial spell in Clayponds Hospital and it was well run and a vital and irreplacable community asset - it must be saved.
