Thoughts on 2013.

As the year draws to a close, thoughts turn to the events of this last year. Has it been a vintage year for you, or has it been 'ordinaire' or even bad?

2013 has been a better than average year for me. On the down side has been the senseless ceaseless killings in Syria, the economy and the shocking and surprising revelations following the Savile findings - Rolf Harris, Tarbuck, Freddie Starr and many others.The up side brought great happiness in Andy Murray being Wimbledon champion, the Duke'n Duchess of Cambridge producing our future king(not that I'll see his coronation), Mo Farah thrilling us by becoming a double double champion of 5 and 10km supremo and the celebration of Nelson Mandela's life(I know it was his funeral) and many other happy events. Its been a better than average year, not vintage, not ordinaire but seven'ish outa ten.

I must confess I didn't know who Malala Yousafzai was, so I looked up the name.  Yes, she's an exceptionally brave young lady - I feel ashamed that I'd forgotten her courage, thoughts and actions.

Yes, the warm summer after so many bad or mediocre ones was a pleasant surprise. Let's not forget inspirational characters such as Malala Yousafzai, who showed a courage I can't imagine being able to emulate.

Better than 2012 IMO Thatcher died, my favourite kebab shop closed, my first daughter was born, warm summer. 7/10

I agree. The whole Diana thing was most unbritish. But applause at Maggie's funeral procession was more affirmation than emotion IMO.

I think public displays of emotion are a modern weakness Graham, like crying on Masterchef when your soufflé doesn't rise.The year has been much as any other imo, some good some bad and some in between.

I shall remember it for the funeral of the Iron Lady. I was standing about 50 yards from St Paul's. As the coffin passed there was sustained applause. I do not remember that at Churchill's funeral procession which I also witnessed. For the worst thing in the year; the foolish redefinition of marriage debacle.

A rather mixed years and the first in a long time with more downs than ups - probably best forgotten and I look forward to 2014 being far, far better.
