Gerry,We’ve only been to one of the Canary Islands - Tenerife, but it is by far the biggest and most popular. The south of the island has the main tourist centre, with large hotels and lots of places offering all-day English breakfasts. We stayed in the north west in Puerto de la Cruz, which is the oldest resort area and has a lot to do and see, but is more relaxed (some might say sedate…) than the south. The Hotel we stayed at, the Tigaiga, is German, environmentally friendly, and very good - it’s a short(ish) walk uphill from the seafront, and has good views - it is highly rated on Trip Advisor (http://www.tripadvisor.co.uk/Hotel_Review-g187481-d294425-Reviews-Hotel_Tigaiga-Puerto_de_la_Cruz_Tenerife_Canary_Islands.html) - the even more highly-rated Hotel Botanico & The Oriental Spa Garden is another local hotel. The main reason we went to Tenerife was the volcano (the third biggest in the world and Spain’s highest mountain). There is a huge national park area around the volcano (with interesting rock formations and unusual plants), and you can go up in a cable car to the huge crater at the top - well worth it (but it will be cold). There are a few places of architectural interest around the island (a new Auditorio in the capital, Santa de la Cruz, by the Santiago Calatrava looks spectacular), and there are some ancient pyramids to visit. There are also some wineries to visit (a few near Santa de la Cruz - www.webtenerife.co.uk/activities/eat-drink/wineries/ - www.greentraveller.co.uk/wineries) - of particular interest is the Malvasía desert wine.If you want to go whale watching, the boats go from the south of the island - we didn’t see many whales, but lots of dolphins, and it was a nice day out… If you really want to see whales and dolphins, the zoo in Puerto de la Cruz, Loro Parque (Parrot Park) is well worth a visit - as its name suggests there are lots of parrots there too.HTH,David
