Hanwell

hello AllAfter living in South Ealing for the past 8 years we have finally jumped on the property ladder and bought a flat in Hanwell. We are quite close to the Fox pub which we love, but i wondered if you had any recommendations for shops, cafe's, restaurants etc as we don't know the area that well?Thanks

I agree with Nigel and others' recommendations and would add a very few more:- My favourite Hanwell restaurant is Thai Cafe at 134 Uxbridge Rd opposite the Clock Tower Cafe (which I like too).  Always good.- I like Urban Karahi and have a soft spot for the Spice of Hanwell a few doors North.  However, I consider the Haweli on Uxbridge Rd W13 to be the best Indian restaurant in the area.  The Zayka on South Ealing Rd is pretty good too.- As Nigel said, There Cycling, opposite Wickes and next to the W7 Emporium (also vg) is an excellent cycle shop.  I've had quite a bit of work done there recently and their advice and approach is exemplary.- I don't think I can agree with Gerry that there are "several good quality pubs in Hanwell".  I agree about the Fox and the Viaduct but there are certainly none North of Uxbridge Rd.- I'm frequently told that the butcher's shop CH Baxter, 330 Greenford Ave is the place to go locally.  I've been in twice and was pleased with what I bought but don't personally cook much meat.- The pet shop (Sylvesters?) 2 doors down is also said to be good.- The Nest off-licence opposite the main Post Office near Lidl is surprisingly good.  Surprising in that it doesn't look too promising from outside.  They have a wide selection of wines and beers and the prices are ok.  It's right next to the Kings Arms, which is one of the few pubs in the area I've never been in.- Hanwell Community Centre deserves a mention as there are quite a few activities carried out there, including an open badminton group and various arts and crafts activities, although it would be a good 15 minute walk from your area:http://www.hanwellcc.co.uk/

Not so sunny today!Hanwell isn't a bad place to be and the area around the Fox is lovely (as is the Fox itself). Hope the move goes smoothly.Nigel...thanks for the kind words, although you may have trading standards after you with your use of the word, "hunky".;-)

I hope the move goes well Kelly and welcome to Hanwell.I used to live near the Fox in the mid 90s and thoroughly enjoyed it. I live further up near the golf course now. A lot of people who move to Hanwell do seem to stay for quite a few years so it must have something going for it. We're lucky we have the river Brent so we have a lot of green space and wildlife.For a decent inexpensive Chinese meal give the Happiness Garden a try. For Indian try the Uraban Karahi on the Greenford Avenue. The Horseshoe Cafe is also good and Bigger Bites has its fans, especially for the classic full English. Also, the baker next to the Golden Chip does wonderful Portuguese custard tarts!

Thanks for all your tips!We move in tomorrow and can't wait to sample Hanwell life. I am very fond of hunky men chasing eggs so maybe i'll see you all down at Hanwell RFC!

Hanwell also have their own rugby club formed this year by a rather handsome and dashing 'young' man.:-)Actually, they have had a remarkable first season, If you are into hunky blokes chasing an egg and watching some real sport I thoroughly recommend watching them play.

'Contactus Ealing' is a fantastic tool for the local area & Carlene is also amazing.On a totally separate note, Hanwell also have their own rugby club formed this year by a rather handsome and dashing 'young' man.*More about Hanwell RFC can be found in the December edition of 'Contactus Ealing'.

Crossrail cancelled?  It is now steaming ahead. Huge areas of Central London around the likes of Bond Street and Tottenham Court Road stations are currently under massive redevelopment to accommodate it.

"... Crossrail will bring up the value..."We have family who bought property in Hanwell about 10 years ago and they say that Crossrail has already increased property values to unpresedented levels. I hope for their sakes that Crossrail isn't cancelled in the end.

Kelly must be an estate agents' dream...Doesn't know the area yet still bought a property in it!You won't go far wrong though as Crossrail will bring up the value,if it hasn't already.

Not to mention a large hospital, the Wharncliffe Viaduct, built in the 1830s by Isambard Kingdom Brunel carrying the Great Western Railway across the Brent valley onward to the west country and several good quality pubs including The Viaduct on the Uxbridge Road. Hanwell is a pleasant place to live.

I lived on St.Mark's Rd for 12 years. There's the bunny park and the golf course too and a nice canal walk.

Enters stage left.Firstly, welcome to the best part of Ealing Kelly - OK, I'm prejudiced.Lots of great shops. W7 Emporium (near Wickes), Little Art Room, great bike shop a good fishmonger. The Polish deli on Hanwell Broadway is great. Clock Tower café (er, by the Clock Tower) a not bad chippy (still not as good as the one at the top of Leighton Road IMHO),  LIDL and,loads and loads of little shops who have been there for years so they must be doing something right.Take a walk around. There is a lovely village feel to large parts of the area. Good churches (if you go to church that is) and great transport links from the top of your road.All in all a nice place to live so, welcome again and, Merry Christmas.

Glad you've settled well in sunny Hanwell - a good place to live. At this point enter Nigel, who is a regular on this forum who knows a great deal about Hanwell and Ealing.
