How to stop cats fouling my garden?

Please can anyone give me tips on preventing cats using my garden as a toilet?I could not believe the amount of cat poo when I went into the garden this week.We have a gadget from Robert Dyas which is supposed to make a sound that keep cats away - it obviously does not work!No wonder we haven't seen any birds in the garden for ages.Help!

This worked for me in Aus. We used to get cats at night making their high pitched meowing and leaving their mess everywhere. During the day I left an open tin of sardines in the sun for a couple of days so they went off. The oil disguises the smell of the off fish and the cats eat it and never come back the only down side is cleaning up the vomit after. The only problem using this in the UK is we have no sun.

The garden is mostly paved but there is an area each side for planting.Some of this area has bare soil and this was targetted as the local Moggie's toilet. I have now moved lots of plants in pots to cover the areas where there is bare soil and hope this will solve the problem.

Hello, if you have P shingle in your garden get rid of it, get something heavier, i cant think of any other reason that you have a cat problem, its the mice and rats i would be worried about, Email me and let me know if i was right, coadyiamf@aol.com

Chris they do mark their territory but it wont get rid of rats and mice

I am told that cats will mark their territory, and that will clear any rats and mice from the area.

Jack, we have friends who live in Alperton who actually have a 6 foot fence around their property and they said they never get cats in the garden! They have a lovely neat and formal garden whereas we have lots of plants in pots where they can crawl in behind them to leave their calling card!We do seem to have a lot of cats in our area and apart from getting a huge dog (no chance)I think we have a long battle on our hands!

I REPEAT NOTHING WILL STOP CATS FROM CRAPPING IN YOUR GARDEN NOT EVEN A SIX FOOT FENCE SO DONT WASTE YOUR MONEY ON ANYTHING  IT WILL A COMPLETE WASTE

Get a high powered water pistol, Super Soaker type, they don't like being wet and will quickly learn.My neighbour has a husky dog and it pees everywhere and chews my plants, it really is a nuisance, it will soon be retrained and learn where it can and cant go.

In this area cats are causing the problem, we have seen them coming in the garden but they are too quick for us!I have now tried scattering orange peel as I believe they don't like the smell. I have also rearranged the plants in pots close together to try and prevent cats from soiling the garden.Strange that cats don't mess up their own gardens and would rather do it somewhere else!There is a fortune to be made if someone could come up with an idea that works. Any other suggestions would be most welcome.

I find that mixing some chilli puree (the stuff that you buy in a tube from the chiller cabinet) with oil and scattering/painting on fences, pots etc discourages squirrels - so it might also work for cats. I suspect that smell puts them off before they get near it.

It is impossible to stop cats from entering and fouling your garden, a dog during the day would help but at night time nothing will stop them ,if anyone invents a system to stop them they will become a  very rich person,you may be given lots of tips from people on here but none of them will work
