Average speed cameras

According to the Evening Standard, speed cameras that monitor average speeds will be placed on the A40 and A406 in an attempt to reduce deaths in black spot areas (or raise more revenue). Not sure when they become operational, maybe someone else will know

They seem to work on both counts.They have them all over the place in the West Midlands. (where i am from originally) According to my father in law there are constant local phone in shows about the massive amounts of people that they catch and the revenue that they generate.My experience is that they do seem to stop the mad dash then brake hard type behaviour that regular cameras create.Didn't realise that we were getting them so ta for the heads up.

The cameras able to do number-plate recognition have been in position for a few years, they just needed the TFL computer software used to provide average speed data to be enabled. A similar system has been running on the road linking Luton and Bedford for several years.
