Happy Thanksgiving!

May I wish every American poster a happy Thanksgiving Day, come Thursday. I like the original ideas behind celebrating Thanksgiving - go out and shoot a turkey for the family dinner, pick some cranberries and choose your largest pumpkin and give thanks for safe deliverance. That's a lovely thought - God bless America!

Anyone interested in American history should read a book called Bury My Heart at Wounded Knee. It is a sorry tale of broken treaties and promises and of betrayal and brutality.

GerryI studiously avoid wishing anyone a ‘happy’ thanksgiving given its origins.The English Dissenters who formed the vast majority of the ‘Pilgrim Fathers’ had not a clue about survival in the new colonies. Had it not been for Patuxet native Americans who taught them how to sow and harvest maize and to ‘fowl’ for the local wildlife they would have starved.Thanksgiving is, in part, a commemoration of how these two disparate groups happily co-existed. The reality is somewhat different with Patuxet people captured and sold into bondage and their lands stolen;  a ‘gift’ that the incomers have inflicted upon native Americans for the ensuing 350 years.
