I`m not convinced either. It seems an awfully inefficeient was to check if houses are empty during the day. What if the occupier just dosn`t go out. Scaremongering again....

Hrrrrmmmm. Still not convinced. Most locksmiths use this to tout for work.

Was the locksmith sticker a number for a genuine business ?

Yes I had one..a clear sticker advertising a locksmith...I threw it away

No, it happens for real. The Sellotape over the lock is an old burglar's dodge and was being used years ago IIRC. This seems to be an update version.

Is this the Daily Mail at it again? It seems to me more likely that it is an amateur locksmith touting for work. Either legitimately or otherwise. An old trick was that dodgy tradesmen would steal a key during works then break in a few months after completion. I always change lock barrels after works when we aren't the only firm on the job.

Well "my" sticker was there for longer than a couple of days. When I google the number it does show as a locksmith, perhaps this really is an urban myth.

It's, sadly, not a new thing. The 'old' trick was to put a bit of tape over the outside door lock and watch if it had been moved.I now have a 'deal' with my neighbours to remove anything like this from each others houses and to push junk mail properly through the letterbox.

Yes Christine, two weeks ago we found a sticker advertising a locksmith stuck across our bell-push in our front porch. We took it off and threw it away. This happens every so often and the local neighbourhood police team advised us to ignore it. It seems that the perpetrators return a coulple of days later and if they see their offending sticker is still in place they then assume that the owners of the house aren't around(possibly on holiday?) and burgle the housr. Crafty beggers! So watch out folks - there maybe burglars about! Grrr!

Yes I had one. The same as the one that is being reported in the media but with a different phone number, this was a mobile number, I just removed the sticker.Anyone else got one?
The Chiswick thread concludes that this is yet another urban myth, although without explaining who is distributing these stickers and why.
