Crisis at Christmas.

I admit to having a bit of a 'rant' last year about the cost of Christmas lunches at a number of our local restaurants.At the time I asked that you consider a donation to Crisis rather than lining the pockets of restaurateurs. Just had an update rom Crisis.They helped over 4000 homeless people with their Christmas and ongoing support packages.Amazing what a difference those £21.80 contributions make.Thanks to all who so generously donated.www.crisis.org.uk/kits

Thanks forthe info Nigel.It must be horrible to be homeless and having to sleep rough on the streets at night, but being Christmas it's surely much more difficult and horrible. Yes, we have lots to be thankful about.

I pray to God Gerry that not one homeless person will be 'wandering through the streets', Gerry but it's a forlorn hope.Government statistics show 2,309 people slept rough in England on any one night during 2012 - a 31 per cent rise on 2010Local agencies reported 6,437 people slept rough in London alone throughout 2012/13  - a 62 per cent rise in two years.A few are there by choice, the rest are an indictment on our 'society'. These are just the rough sleepers and don't include those in shelters, bed and breakfast accommodation and hostels.Give thanks for what you've got.

Every four days, but bless you Tony!I made another online donation earlier this week, no I am not blowing my own trumpet but when you call Crisis they sound so genuinely and sincerely grateful that someone is thinking of others far less fortunate than themselves.

As I have just seen a pub offering a three course Christmas lunch for £65.00 this is an unashamed 'bump'.

Christmas - I call it the season of stress and excess.It is stressful just trying to get around doing normal day to day things with the shops' shelving changed around and more people just wandering about looking at the tempting things on offer.  Sometimes they are just ordinary things with extra special packaging...If we could just let go of all the things that we think we have to have then it would be so much easier.  And so much cheaper if you go shopping for a turkey on Boxing Day!Take time now to make a space in the freezer so that you do not waste any of the perishable food that you do buy but don't actually need over Christmas.  I'll swear the guidelines over how much turkey is needed per person is based on someone only eating turkey and not turkey with all the wonderful accompaniments that make the meal.  You can freeze that cold turkey meat once you've roasted it.  You can easily make stock from the carcase in a slow cooker and freeze that.Just attempting to get together with family and friends is difficult and good - so we are lucky.What Crisis at Christmas does for those who are not so lucky is truly magnificent - support them!
