Now that Robert Dyas has closed in the Arcadia Centre (it will open in the Broadway Centre) in the New Year where is the nearest alternative for all those things I could find there?

"The ultimate tool shop if you don't mind travelling a bit is D & M Tools in Twickenham (which has the extra bonus of being immediately adjacent to a Machine Mart for all things mechanical in tools and equipment)."D&M are great, I recommended them to the venerable Gerry when he was looking for tools as presents"The South Ealing Screwfix also has a tool shop (the name of which escapes me now) two units along on the same estate."That'd be Toolstation.

Tools 4 Trade has a much wider range of what I would characterise as "serious" tools than EBT. I love EBT (although less so since the original owners sold it a few years ago) but it's real strength is as an ironmongers (and to a lesser extent timber merchant). The tool department is almost rudimentary. The Tools 4 trade stock is a mix of top quality (and expensive) professional tools and very cheap stuff (some of which is good and some of which is not so good).I have used them many times when I simply must have that new tool on the day. They are also open on Sundays which is very useful. For more mundane purposes Wickes in Hanwell and B&Q on the Chiswick roundabout also have reasonable tool sections. The ultimate tool shop if you don't mind travelling a bit is D & M Tools in Twickenham (which has the extra bonus of being immediately adjacent to a Machine Mart for all things mechanical in tools and equipment). The South Ealing Screwfix also has a tool shop (the name of which escapes me now) two units along on the same estate.

Do you rate Tools4Trade in Boston Road for quality tools?I was impressed with their stock levels during the Summer but I'm out of touch with prices.

I was very fond of Ealing Boards and Timber until their delivery lorry took out my telephone line several weeks ago. While trying to organise a 95th birthday party amongst other things I had a week of BT/Openreach ineptitude and was phoning them every day until it was eventually reinstated a complete week later. If you have a telegraph pole near your house and anybody doing building work make sure they take extra care to make sure that there a plenty of people around at delivery time to watch that crane and the telegraph wires during the manoeuvre! It will take me a while to recover. If I catch sight of BT and Openreach within both arms reach I shall want to bang heads together.

Well I thought that was what I read on a note in the window of the now very empty shop! I can't remember if it said exactly where but it did say not until the new year.Thank you for the ideas of where else to go. Robert Dyas is a very useful shop.
For the widest selection Gerry, Ealing Boards and Timber opposite where the old Daniel's store was in west Ealing.

I too didn't know Robert Dyas was going to open in EB Shopping Centre. Where abouts please? Which tool shop in Ealing/Hanwell/Acton has the best tools?

Ooh, I didn't know that. Whereabouts in the Broadway Centre will it be?
