Are performance related pay rises a good thing? Or should one expect an automatic annual rise in pay, irrespective of how we perform our duties? Imo, one shouldn't strike against prp.

Prp is quite often viewed as an encouragement for managers to get rid of staff and to give the work they would have done either to agency staff or to the staff who are left. This obviously reduces the money that their dept. uses. It was brought in under Thatcher in the 1980's and was very unpopular particularly in all walks of the public services because it was perceived to not only do the above but to fester bad feeling between management and staff. It would possibly be fairer if non management staff were rewarded in this way, thus encouraging increased diligence but the unions, for good reasons as well as bad, would never wear that.
