Re-select me or get a woman candidate?

According to a former Labour Activist Cllr Dheer the Deputy Leader of Ealing Council has been canvassing Labour members in Southall insisting they re-select him and his colleagues or they may end up with a woman as a candidate.In a tweet, former Labour Party Councillor Gurcharan Singh says "Southall Cllr dhami,dheer nd bagha visiting lab members 4 support saying that if 1 of them deselected, a female will b selected. 4 equality?"I hope this is not true.

When I saw the heading of this thread I thought for a moment that Benjamin was worried about his colleagues in Hangar Hill replacing him by, of all things, a woman. Not the sort of thing that goes on in UKIP I'm sure!

Councillor Dheer will be hard to beat.He is one of the better people Southall has for the Job. I doubt very much that Councillor would have uttered a reselection threat .

Absolutely Keith.I would like to think that whomsoever is elected represents the views of all. Something, sadly, not very evident in neither Ealing Southall as a parliamentary constituency nor Ealing council at the moment.

Some might think a chimpanzee, male or female, might be a more worthwhile candidate for public office than some of the turkeys currently serving themselves, and occasionally us....I heard part of a discussion on LBC this morning when a woman was saying it was important to have women cabinet ministers so that they can go into bat for women. This misses the point of equality imo...a politician should go in to bat for everyone as everyone is a voter.

Labour have had 'women only' lists for years.It matters not one jot to me about the race, colour, sexual preference or gender of a candidate as long as they are capable of doing the job, and in context, for ALL of the people they have been selected to represent.I do however dislike positive discrimination inasmuch that it 'skews' the playing field and good people get passed over because of other's prejudices. It also makes it damned difficult for the candidate selected under this process as they will be forever fighting the "you only got the job because you are black/brown/the right shade of beige/gay/Catholic/whatever" tag.
