I've just returned from my second trip to South Africa. This time I went into the townships and then into the shanty towns. We had dinner with a lady who works for an affiliate.  She lives in a township near Cape Town. What I heard was almost sit com fodder.  She was complaining about immigrants coming into the Townships and claiming benefits like a home and then renting them out.A huge building project has been going to rid the areas of shanty huts by building small proper homes with facilities. They are moved into them but many rent them out and move back into makeshift huts. But she was complaining that these areas are growing faster than the authorities can build these homes.Immigrants from other parts of Africa a flocking there as the promise of a free home is for Africans not just local South Africans. It's causing friction and resentment and social problems the state cannot afford.  Most of the new arrivals have no intention of working just carrying on as they have but with a house to either rent out or live in. Then it turns out much of it is political as these immigrants get to vote and they are told who to vote for. It is a game for politicians to profit from in terms of power. They don't care, none of them will be living there but they will have voters in their pockets.Sounds a bit familiar does it not?  But it is on a far wider and more blatant scale there than here.So a van warning illegal immigrants is a bit tame. Maybe a van warning those who profit from using and abusing illegal immigrants would be better. Then a certain MP or two would have cause to be a bit worried along with several of his associates.
