South coast resorts

I'm looking for a weekend break on the south coast. Something very English, smallish, not too busy. So far recommendations have included Littlehampton, Swanage and Lyme Regis. Any other suggestions please?

I went to Littlehampton on Thursday to the East Beach Cafe - food was out of this world. I agree it's tacky and wouldn't stay there but the beach is super (Blue Flag)and the Cafe http://www.eastbeachcafe.co.uk/ is well worth a visit for the food and amazing design. We also popped over to West Wittering which was lovely.

Unless that 'variety' makes no attempt to integrate into Worthing. Sorry Gerry, but I would stick with your memories of Worthing in the 70's; it is a tawdry place now with only a few remnants of 'what once was'.

I last went to Worthing in the 70s - it was a long time ago.  And what's dodgy about chavs and a bit of bling? Or foreign students?  Nothing like a bit of variety!

When did you last go to Worthing Gerry.I popped down last year having spent many summer holidays there with my parents and found it a combination of 'chavvy' and full of marauding gangs of foreign language 'students'. It still has its attractions; a 'proper' cinema, two theatres and a great Italian restaurant opposite the pier but I wouldn't call it either genteel or 'relaxed' any longer.

We've always liked Worthing - a pleasant place to spend a relaxed weekend imo.

Neil, those places heave with coaches and tourists and double yellow lines. You may wish to choose a nearby village instead. Lyme would be my choice because the surrounding countryside is very attractive with rolling downs.Dartmouth is attractive, but obviously very touristy.

I also like Whitstable quaint and quirky. Littlehampton is not at all pleasant IMHO. The little places between it and Worthing however are most pleasant.
