New Carpets

Hi - can anyone recommend a good place to buy decent carpets AND a carpet fitter please?Thanks

That's one of the good things about going to an established large carpet supplier(like John Lewis or Daniels), they give you a written quote detailing all the work involved(like it says on the can) and there's clear transparency as to what's included. One doesn't always get that with all smaller local firms.

I don't mind paying for the old carpet to be taken away, given that dumps do charge for this; it's when carpet fitters turn up and refuse to take up the old carpet that I get annoyed. I suppose one has to check in advance what's included these days, but I'm sure when I was first married and setting up house (talking 1980, here), it was taken for granted that pulling up the old carpet was part of the job.

I think they all charge extra to take the old carpet away, because they are charged by the dumps. I was told by a carpet fitter it costs approx. £60 to dump. (not sure how true that is). Does anyone know how much the local dumps charge a man with a van? I think it goes on the weight of the rubbish.Off course all these things should be talked about before they turn up.

They have always been very supportive of the Hanwell Carnival (when I was involved) and we should all suppport local businesses when they also support the local communities as well.

Were they prepared to take up the old carpets, Susan, since we came up against this problem last time we needed a new carpet of having them arrive expecting bare boards, which we'd never encountered in 'the good old days'?

Northfields Carpets did all our bedroom and hall/landing carpets - competitive prices and knew what they were doing so quick and uncomplicated service

Often there are charges for extra and unforeseen items like easing doors over thicker carpets, moving furniture, invisible joining of carpet sections, floorboard levelling and securing, removal of old carpets etc.  Its good to have a survey visit before the contract is finally quoted and to agree a laying date. John Lewis and Daniels usually work like this - some smaller local firms may not.

Daniels, Uxbridge Rd. A good range of qualities and prices. Excellent service and their fitters do not require you to have emptied rooms and removed the old carpet and underlay, unlike CarpetRite which insists on a cleared room and bare boards.

Its good to see local businesses being supported. I haven't had any experiences with local carpet providers; we've always used John Lewis for our floor coverings and they've always been good, so we've stuck by them.
