Will the last person...please turn out the lights?

Why is it that the problem of the lights being left on at the council offices requires a massive upgrade to save £192,592?http://www.ealingtoday.co.uk/default.asp?section=info&link=http://nnet-server.com/server/common/eaealinglights001.htmSurely all that needs to happen is that the last person working in any given area / floor simply throws a couple of switches?When I was a young lad my dad soon taught me not to leave lights on in the house.  Did nobody else get that valuable training?Why does this simple discipline not extend to people working in offices?(I suppose if you're not paying the bill you don't care do you...)Most larger organisations used to have night-time security at one time and a part of the job was to go around and turn out all the lights after hours.  Does Ealing council not have an overnight security presence in Percival House?Anybody know how much this upgrade is going to cost?I bet it is a helluva a lot more than £192,000!!!S'funny really, because, as an electronic engineer with a keen interest in renewables and efficiency, I am 100% behind sensible control systems to manage this kind of thing but what I can't abide is waste at the council.  This kind of system should have been installed from the absolute outset at Percival House at the very least - not retrofitted at vast expense decades later.

"motion sensors to control lights"I recently visited a new hospital extension where when you sat still in the en suite shower-room the lights went out. Had to instruct surprised and alarmed aged parent to remember to wave arms in the air when visiting that little room.So no taking a book in with you to read!

Not certain what you mean Philippa. But if you mean the security guards should patrol they should have a sensor or two to touch on each floor to prove they have been there.It's normal practice.

"When I was a young lad my dad soon taught me not to leave lights on in the house.  Did nobody else get that valuable training?"Yes, when I was a lad we were very sensitive about lights unnecessarily left on, 'cos it was during WWII and there was what was known as "black out" at nightime. One had to be careful or the police or air raid wardens would knock on one's door! That was in the late 30s early 40s.  Ha ha, happy days!

As you say, it's not their money that they are spending.Else there would be an explanation for the 'vanity' resurfacing of Longfield Avenue when elderly residents of Curzon Avenue cannot negotiate their broken pavements.Prudent spending would also question the vanity car park in Southall and the 'town square' at North Acton station.Roll on May 2014.
