The average cost of making a cup of cappucino at a coffee outlet is about 20p(to include all expenses of the coffee shop ie rent, staff wages, product cost etc). True or false?

I find 30p a reasonable price to pay for a really good cup of coffee, available in my kitchen in one minute flat. I don't begrudge Nespresso a decent profit: they're a business, not a charity bringing coffee to desperate housewives.

I would be surprised if it was that high. In the pantheon of things owners should never have said (think Gerald Ratner) the owner of Starbucks was on tv training barristas and outlining to them that the entire material cost was less than 1% so their technique and level of service were the critical factors. Why is everyone so surprised at such things?

It is a rare product that beats the gross margins on those capsules.Convenient they maybe, but oh do you pay for the privilege.(Nothing wrong in that of course given that coffee is hardly one of life's essentials (I know, I know :-) ) and the expenditure comes off the "discretionary" budget. Without life's little luxuries where would we be?)

I love my Nespresso. First came upon them in a couple of hotels we stayed at in Dublin and Nice and bought our own about 18 months ago. They're so quick and easy to use, apart from anything else. I buy the capsules in bulk online for free next day delivery. The kitchen shop on Ealing Green stocks the machines.

Will the average coffee price in Ealing come down when Tescos open their outlet? I suspect not.

I use Nespresso pods & love them, once you've found your favourites. I got fed up with the mess & cleaning using freshly ground coffee in a conventional espresso machine

Are those pod thingies any good Susan? I have a trusty De Longhi coffee maker and a vietnamese coffee fin at work (life is too short for instant)to get my fix.I have never tried the pods.

That sounds a bit low, given that the capsules for my home Nespresso machine cost 30p each.
