Florentine cafe on Northfield Avenue
I tried this (recently opened) cafe for lunch today. On the basis of the "Swiss" baguette that I tried, these guys are a cut above the other places on Northfield Avenue, with only the excellent Papillon being a proper rival. It's been a long time I've tasted such good bread; crusty on the outside with a pleasantly dense squidginess on the inside. The sort of bread that you can still taste even when you've got a load of filling in your mouth. When I sang its praises to the owner, he told me it was "Hungarian artisan" bread and he preceded to excitedly show me his sliced white loaf. It looked like A.N.Other loaf but then he asked me to hold it. It weighed a ton. "Artisan sourdough", he said, proudly.Excellent orange juice, too. The only downside is that the portion size is touch on the large side (I'm supposed to be on a diet). That minor quibble aside, this cafe deserves to be popular.Incidentally, there's not much sign of life at Blah Lounge, just up the road. Could it possibly have closed down already? Wouldn't surprise me if it has.
