So you are advocating that politicians know best what we want Martin and that we are not sufficiently clued up to really know what is best for us?  If there had been a big public demand for slavery and hangings we would probably still have them.That people in parliament have banned thm both and those same people been re-elected shows that the majority of people were against those two barbaric states.There are still countries where you can witness public hangings btw but you will also witness very little democracy there.

I have never read any reference to a plebiscite desire for the continuation of slavery. Many of those who voted or the emancipation were previously slave 'owners'.Those who voted to stay in the Common Market (there was no exit option on the ballot paper) have not had the chance to revisit Heath's steamrollering. Indeed no-one under the age of 55 has even been given the choice.

You're perfectly right there, but then the world is a very very different place too. Look at the changes since we joined.The internet has globalised communication, China has become a superpower and the USA has stopped being one. The monolithic Soviet Union has been replaced by shadowy and far more dangerous Islamic terroists as the primary security threat. This country is now a nett importer of fuel, we now import Poles instead of Irish to dig our ditches.... the list could go on and on.I'm not a fan of the Tories but Posh Dave deserves some positive comment for the renegotiation and referendum policy. It's the right thing to do. I just wish he's get on with it before we end up with that awful Thereas May as Prime Minister.BTW, I know plenty of Germans who are sick to the back teeth of what the EU has turned in to. There's serious pressure for reform there too.

Thank you for neatly illustrating the mal-informed Little Englander syndrome. 20 seconds on Google lead me to this informative summary, maybe you'd like to research before posting your arguments on the internet:http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-20318205Anyhow, it's not the ECHR at 'fault' here, it's the way British judges have chosen to interpret the Declaration of Human Rights in to English Law.We are extremely fortunate to live in a country with a system of criminal law that is accountable, reasonable and proportionate. Nobody is allowed to kick down your front door at 4 in the morning and throw you in to jail or put on a plane out of here simply because they don't like your views. People died defending these freedoms, maybe the UKIP supporters would like to think a little before they throw them away?

It has been obvious for some time now that the 3 main parties are just not listening to the members of the public.They seem to live in a world of their own, so it is hardly surprising that UKIP has done so well in the local elections!Maybe now Cameron and co will take note - although it may be too little too late.

Not so sure it's the same sport that is being played now as at the start of the game Gavin.The game was called 'Common Market'when we started playing and it then morphed into 'EEC' and then 'EU' so I think we are entitled to a steward's enquiry about our continued involvement.As long as it doesn't go to penalties against Germany....

I want to be out of the EU, but I still want to trade with European countries and do deals with them and experience and partake in the common culture we share with the whole European continent. Any party who will allow this has my vote.

What is the matter with certain people on here condemning people who want out of the EU as "xenophobic bigots"? This nation needs to get out of the EU as soon as possible because at the moment it is nothing more than the world's toilet and we can't boot out turds like Abu Catada & other foreign criminals who are here just to sponge off welfare without the EU's say so. I want my country and it's powers back! UKIP ALL THE WAY!

My worry is that there are 'UKIP equivalent' parties in France, Germany and the Netherlands. If they all 'picked up the ball and walked off the park' then the EU, which has become a self-serving behemoth, would be in total turmoil.Westminster has totally failed to engage over successive administrations and the first party that actually explains its policies (will that ever happen?) will be a shoe-in with the electorate.

The rise of UKIP/BNP (and they are that close on policy that can be viewed as a single block) is very much down to Westminster not explaining why policy is the way it is. Just because some mal-educated small minded Little Englander thinks a policy is wrong doesn't automatically make it wrong. 9 times out of 10 the Little Englander has failed to grasp the bigger picture.Nobody is going to argue that the EU doens't need root and branch reform, but just picking up your football and storming out of the park because you don't like the way the other boys are playing doesn't help matters.

The rise of UKIP amongst the Conservatives and the BNP amongst Labour supporters shows how the main parties have not listened. They have their Focus groups dominated by their Oxbridge friends and in reality have ignored the average folk. The Labour leadership under Blair moved so far to the right. So Benjamin is perhaps lacking in tact, however important issues that affect all British people and by that I include Black and Asian people who are British have somehow been ignored. in order to fuel the profits of large corporations people are working below the minimum wage on an illegal basis. Our relationship with Europe is complex but whilst Cameron may talk a good game he is afraid to upset the apple cart. Many of our friends in Europe question the Euro and the damage it is doing to democracy. But like the emperors new clothes, no one can talk about it in case Brussels accuses them of Racism. We are ending up with politicians who are afraid to lead. the result is that we could be in danger from more extreme parties. Serious problems need serious discussion and an acceptance of failures and also reality. the G8 and EU conferences are about where you stand in the photo. A problem not just for us but in many countries.
