Ban Suarez for Life

A Liverpool footballer bit a Chelsea footballer in a Premiership League match yesterday. The biter was Suarez. The bite was clearly visible on BBC TV's Match of the Day.(Liverpool has apparently fined Suarez but for some unknown reason won't reveal the size of the fine).Clearly the player is mentally ill or mentally disabled but surely he cannot be allowed to play football again in this country. The Premiership, The Football League and The Football Association should ban him for life. Similarly UEFA should make him serve a life ban and FIFA should ban him worldwide.UEFA (and FIFA) should have already taken this action as Suarez previously bit another player when playing outside the UK but in mainland Europe.

There seems to be 100% agreement on this forum that FIFA and its bigwigs are corrupt. Now that Suarez has returned to Uruguay and one of their 1950 winning side has spoken out against him I don't think FIFA will back down on this ban. The Uruguayans have no leverage left.

Football should be banned for life. The subject takes up to much space on this website. This Council has given away for nothing our biggest playing fields to a private company, so that our hugely expanding young population will end up doing exercise on the flat rooves of high rise buildings.Can we at least make biting politicians legit?

They will 'bottle it' though as Uruguay form part of the powerful CONMEBOL voting bloc of FIFA. The 10 national associations that form CONMEBOL have as much 'clout' as the 55 European associations that form UEFA. They are strong supporters of Blatter and he will do anything to keep the status quo and his position.

I can't decide whether I think he should be banned for life or for a season or two. The most important thing is that he must never bite anyone again - is there a punishment or any sanction that would achieve that, short of a lifetime ban? My personal view is that this is such an unusual offence, with regard to professional sport, that FIFA don't need to "set an example" to other players or youngsters etc, they need to prevent him from doing this again. Eric Cantona was banned for a season for assaulting a fan and, afaik, that was his first offence, however abhorrent his actions were. Third time for Suarez and only a 4 month ban is perverse.Unless Uruguay can come up with a legal reason to contest the ban I think FIFA will be compelled to uphold it. However corrupt they are, this is their blue riband event and they can't afford to back down.

I think his ban is about right. My team play them 2 games before he is back which suits me.4 months fro ALL football is better in some ways than 2 years of just internationals. Expect it to be reduced on a stupid restriction of trade type idea.

Do you have anger management issues or some other kind of personality disorder that you are unable to keep under control? There are trained people who can help you.Why does football need to be replaced with anything? What I'm saying is that its about time these "players" were reminded who pays the wages and that failure should not be rewarded. That is the lesson that is most important to teach kids. Yet somehow when it comes to sport, win or lose, behave disgracefully, the rewards are there.

Its a funny old game isn't it?All things aside, from comments on this very forum, it seems that there is too much football on TV, a lack of ability amongst home grown "talent" and on a more local level, the council give land away for free to a football team from another borough! Surely as consumers of football, you are the people who pay the wages, why not do something about it? Take no interest in what is said by players, managers, coaches, cancel your subscriptions to sports channels, don't renew that season ticket and cut off the bottomless pit of income that is provided for them.

I think we will have a Fifa bottle job here and he will be let off with a caution. The South American associations will close ranks and he will be let off somehow or the suspension put on hold until Uruguay are knocked out of the comp.He may even go on to score the winner in the final, or even handball a sure goal off the line like he did against Ghana in the last comp.He has had more chances than enough to reform and has again bitten the hand that feeds him...

If you believe what you read in the papers, the Uruguayan media are going potty at the English press, accusing them of stirring this matter up and saying that in 1966, the ball never crossed the line for that "goal". Their hilarious rant continues with them saying that it's clear Suarez slipped and his teeth inadvertently went into the Italian defenders back. I mean, you couldn't make this shit up!Personally, I believe FIFA need to make an example of Suarez, but will lack the balls to carry it through IMO.

Not sure you can assume that without knowing him personally Gerry.He has already showed a lack of contrition and humility by saying he should be banned for only 3 games for this.His behaviour will tell.Anyway,Liverpool will be paying him circa £120pw to sit in the stands for the rest of the season and for 6 games next term.I should imagine a manager can just about stomach that if a player is genuinely injured,but Rodgers must be spewing at the fact that he has been put in the posiyion of having his best forward and goalscorer by far out because he can't control his petulance and indiscipline.As A United fan(since I was a foetus) I am absolutely gutted for them...

An anger management course of treatment suggests that some minor adjustments in your attitudes might make you more 'acceptable' to society.Biting another human being if you are an adult is clearly a massive problem - and Suarez has done it twice in public.It's irrelevant that Suarez is a talented footballer,Hitler was a a talented painter and decorator but that didn't excuse his extermination of 6 million Jews.As for depriving Suarez of a living he's clearly earned many millions already. Would you like to play football against some one who might bite you?

Biting another person is quite strange imo,unless of course you are in fear of your life.He has also got previous for this,he bit PSV player Otman Bakkal in Nov 2010.It's a strange and disturbing thing to do,and with teeth like his quite dangerous imo.My neighbour is from Ghana and hates Suarez for what he did in the last World Cup.He is a very good striker but has loads of psychological baggage imo.

Banning Suarez from football for life is rather hard. The poor lad bit an opponent - worse things happen on football pitches. Banning is far too harsh imo. Football is his living and its probably the only thing the poor lad can do -I don't think he's got equivalent Uruguayan A Levels to his name such that he could earn a living in the Montevideo Stock Market! Give him a break - we all made mistakes when we were young - give him a 10 match ban but not one for life!

It's a shame as he's a brilliant player. Tore us (QPR) to shreds but he's not alone in that.I just thought it was hilarious when he scored in the 97th minute, no doubt the 6 mins was partly because of his activities. I was expecting 3-4 mins though max. But then I am biased against CFC for obvious reasons.I think he should get a 10 game ban and then a suspended ban of 12 games should he repeat such an action. Problem is he could do a Barton and go abroad where the ban does not count.FA will probably let him off as they have Macmanaman and Aguero.

He reacted just like an animal would.It is almost certainly a mental limitation, a defect.But does that mean he cannot be part of society?Just because he has a small albeit unpalatable defect, he should be banned?Some people lie uncontrollably which seems to commonly afflict politicians.Lies which often affect a great many people.Never see them getting life bans from politics.Highly paid, engulfed with PRs, agents and hangers on, plus the pressure to perform at 200% to justify their wages and fees.These are very young men, many of whom are barely able to carry a conversation, their ability and gift is on the football pitch.They have all the money and trappings but have not really developed as people. Football (or showbiz) consumes them to saturation point. Consequently they behave erratically or in a childish undeveloped way but in an adult world.We as fans don't notice because they are icons and therefore no-one questions their behaviour until something extreme occurs.There should be a lot more than money in their profession. Some of it should be diverted to providing some way of rounding off their interrupted education.And if that means they and others feeding of the cash cow that is football making less then that would not be a bad thing either.

When people in football and just outside go on about these things there is always a degree of hypocracy. Cantona was perhaps the key example. I was there that night and what he got sent off for was an appaling challenge (prior to the kung fu incident). His stamping on players heads and other far more violent acts than saurez were ignored. Manchester United fans treated this very fine but violent player as some kind of persecuted hero. I believe that he should be punished but not singled out for a life ban or anything like that. Liverpool have acted with speed. but let's await the FA on this one. Biting is not normal, but nor is stamping on players heads.

I was trying to point out that biting by adults is not normal behaviour and that Suarez is ill or disabled in some way.Liverpool apparently are sending Suarez on an anger management course which again is missing the point as he needs professional help.I'm not suggesting that for example BPD or bipolar sufferers can't play professional or amateur team games. You a have misinterpreted me or perhaps I expressed myself badly.

We all know Suarez was revolting and disgusting, but to write "clearly the player is mentally ill or mentally disabled" is outrageous. This post suggests that people with mental health problems should not be allowed to play professional football, which is just as repulsive and not what I would expect from you.

The act of a coward protected by the public stage and the professionalism of the victim. I'd like to see him bite Ivanovic out in the street.He won't be banned for life, he'll get 10 games max. The powers that be would never set a precedent with such extreme punishment. The fine should be proportionate to the length of the suspension though but, again, the club are bent over a barrel by the players and it will be a token gesture (considering his wage).He's clearly vermin, but where do you draw the line for a life ban? Should Keane, Cantona, et al also have been banned for life for their indiscretions?

Agreed. This is not his first offence and it's simply unacceptable. As for the police saying that the man bitten doesn't want to bring charges, they don't need his consent: they have all the evidence required for a prosecution.
