Justice?

Mick Philpott - His actions are responsible for the tragic death of his 6 children. Sentance - 15 years in prison. I don't think the children got justice in this case.Nicholas McFadden - Ex Detective who sold £1m drugs to fund his lavish lifestyle - jailed for 23 yearsBoth despicable crimes and it is good that these people are locked up for a long time, but surely Mick Philpott should have been told that he will not get out of prison ever again for what he did.

They normally cover that with "99 years or life, whichever is the longer". Otherwise known as "Look sucker, you ain't getting out....ever!"

Yes, you have to love America where they think nothing of sentencing someone to 450 years; just in case someone suddenly invents a cure for death, presumably.

I do not approve of this widespread "to be served concurrently" business.For the most part, if two or more crimes are committed then I think the sentences should run consecutively.

Philpott should be in prison for life imo; he's a thoroughly evil individual. A very sad affair.

He WAS given a life sentence. There would be no point in giving him one for each death as they are, unsurprisingly, served concurrently. Please remember that 15 years is the MINIMUM he must serve. I don't believe any parole board is going to free him so early.If I'd been the CPS, I'd have charged him with murder. No one believes that he intended to kill the children, given that they were his 'property' and a source of income, but murder charges have been brought successfully when people die through sheer recklessness.

The maximum tariff for manslaughter is life imprisonment. He could (should) have been given a life sentence for each 'murder' with a recommendation that he serve a minimum of 30 years.

I wondered that myself, Tony; the conviction is only for manslaughter and not murder, so maybe she feared a longer tariff would be challenged.

Philpott doesn't strike me as the sort of man to 'keep his nose clean' in prison so he's very unlikely to get out after 15 years. The judge said she thought he ought never to be released.As for the policeman, the abuse of his position is what earned him a well-deserved 23 years.

What SHOULD happen on his first day in prison."This is Philpott, he killed six innocent children, let's give him the 'special welcome' we reserve for such people (to be repeated for each day that he survives).What WILL happen.Placed in isolation for his own protection, resources allocated to 'protect' him costing us a damned fortune.The 'man' disgusts me.

Looking at the man, I can't understand how any woman could allow him to get anywhere near her. When I originally saw him at the Police  public presentation  and his supposed grief and crying, there were NO tears and my thoughts were then he did it. What a thoroughly disgusting specimen of humanity. I hope he gets the s..t beaten out of him regularly in prison. As you say Jean, 15 years is no where near enough, but whatever is the  time he spends  behind bars, let's hope they are years of misery. Were we not told on TV News  when sentenced he showed no remorse. Should be horse-whipped.

It's a minimum 15 year sentence.But you are right...our society has a weird and nallsed up value system quite often..Like a few years ago when the survivors or spouses of the Burma/Thai railway soldiers were given £10,000 compensation in the same week that a woman was awarded 250k for some kind of 'harrassment' at work.If Philpot ever gets out of chokey in one piece,I suppose he'll go straight back on the bludge and claim benefits.
