Social classes

How many social classes are there in the UK today? Is social class important, like it used to be?  Which social class do I think I should be seen to be in?  Which social class do others think I should be part of?  Does it matter?

I disagree, Asha. The pop stars you mention haven't changed class: they've merely acquired money. Social mobility usually comes through education.

I don't know if others agree but  in my opinion, there are no good " comedians " now, like there used to be. Hence why the old programmes are still shown on TV. Dad's Army for example, and Kenneth Williams can still get me in stitches with some of his sketches, especially the one at the end  when it is in pidgeon French ( Camenbert and all that ). Frankie Howard, Benny Hill, Open all Hours with Ronnie and Nurse Gladys Emanuel?. Brilliant. The stand-up ones now leave me stone cold, they must please loads of people as they seem popular but not for me. Maybe some of us have known better times, nationally  as well as locally!!

I think people can move up and down in the social class ladder but they can never escape their true roots.eg. many of the pop stars you see who come from council estates now own Mercedes, BMW's, have homes in america and designer bags but they still talk rough and swear and have no standards. So would you class them as middle class or working class. Is it to do with the amount of money you have or how you speak?

Seven, according to the latest academic study.No, but sadly some believe that money can buy them 'class'.Established middle-class (take the survey on the BBC website and, if you don't listen to hip-hop or go to bingo, it seems to be the default).You are in a class of your own young Gerry.Only to those to whom class has always mattered.
