I did notice on the slip road from the A40 to Hanger lane (towards London from Perivale)that the little car sales on the slip is doing camper hire, no idea of prices etc

Far better to hire professionally than try to 'hire' one privately. That would be fraught with all kinds of insurance issues and by hiring professionally you have some redress and a degree of assurance about maintenance and the like.
