Bangs In The Night

Over the past few months on an occasional basis I've heard what sounds like a pile driver at work at night in the early hours. Its woken me a number of times at around four in the morning and did so yet again last night (Saturday night/Sunday morning).We live in Boileau Road, North Ealing and its sounds like the banging comes from the direction of Acton. Its starts quite loud and, over a period of about ten minutes gradually reduces in volume as (I assume) the pile gets lower down. I first noticed it about six months ago and hear it only every so often and when the window is open, but find it amazing noisy works like this can be undertaken at such hours.Does anyone have any idea where its coming from?

Have hard it too recently and this morning between about 4.30 and 5.20am.  We live in Fordhook Avenue, near Ealing Common tube, and  hear a loud kind of cracking / banging/ splintering noise  at c. 1 second intervals coming from the north east of where we are.  This is followed by a dull thud transmitted through our walls (probably the shock waves !); the thud is the noise that wakes us up, as can't hear the cracking/ banging noise unless I open the windows.  Would also like to know what it is.....

I heard very similar years ago in Brentford...all night it went on.It was an illegal rave party in one of the empty warehouse units by the lock!

Chris, can't say I've heard anything in the wee small hours, but then I sleep deeply at night, the sleep of the just and the innocent.
