It is said that there is a one hundred year cycle on these things.i.e. an area goes from slum to posh and back to slum again over the course of a century in step with the finances of the people living there.Expensive areas force families to move further out leaving behind a gap that must be filled.

The reason I posted this is to be read in conjunction with the census analytics posted last week.Your are absolutely right about the baby boomers although the comment earlier in this thread about youngsters moving in isn't supported by the census.I know from my own parish church and community that we have a stable population with few moves and changes. There are young families but they are getting fewer and fewer dissuaded by the property prices. I expect many of them to move away from Ealing by 'cashing in' when their children grow into adulthood.One thing that all of these figures show is an ageing population in many areas and an ethnic 'shift' that needs to be recognised in the provision of health care and other services.It makes the decision to close/downgrade the A&E departments at four of our local hospitals an even more 'unsound' decision.

For me an interesting aspect is space in that when people first come to London that like to be closer to the centre and that space is expensive and when they start families then tend to move further out. At my church in ealing we get younger people but as soon as they start having families many move further out not being able to afford to live here. There are many factors and as people from incoming communitees have prospered we have always seen people from those communities moving further out. We all have to start somewhere but unfortunately some folk never escape. when i came to London 34 years ago most of my friends were foreigners as such to london being Welsh, northern, irish and scots. but we were white and less noticeable. but London has always brought people from outside. it is like a natural physical phenomena. once they prosper they move out or go home.

I don't think there is anything sinister going on Nigel,I guess what's really happening is that the "baby boomers" are,as they reach retirement age, cashing in on the exhalted house prices in Ealing, downsizing to bungalows in the country and building up their cash reserves for oncoming old age, just being sensible I reckon.  My own large family, all Ealonians have spread to the three corners of Britain, Cornwall,Devon,Surrey,Sussex (lots) and us bringing up the rear in the frozen north.  I don't think it's anything to do with the so called white flight,(it certainly isn't in my family anyway),it's just a feeling of "I've done my bit in the hurley burley,it's time for taking it easy".  Once all of us baby boomers have clopped our pogs it'll all settledown again,you'll see!  P.S. Since starting to write 3 others have replied and for once I agree with all of them!

I think Tony has hit the point.Couple these statistics with those census analytics that were posted last week and it is interesting to note how the social make up has changed.

Yes, It's also indicative of changing industry. People no longer have to 'commute' to work. We can work from home so it no longer matters where home is. It may as well be in the country/by the sea where the air is cleaner and property is cheaper.
