Horse meat.

What's horse meat taste like please?  Don't think I've ever had it(knowingly!).  Where is one likely to get in Ealing?  Does it go well with horsradish sauce?

It's basically twice the price of the horse.

Are there any restaurants(or supermarkets) in Ealing that sell good quality horsemeat or donkeymeat - I mean the stuff bred and reared specifically for the table and not old nags past their "sell by" date(like me!). If they sell biltong then why not harse meat?

I've eaten it in both France and, most recently, Italy (where I also had some donkey, which was a bit tough). The horse steak in Italy was delicious, but let's remember that it would have been bred for the table, not some old nag that's been sneaked into the food chain.I heard on Radio 4 yesterday that many 'squeezed-middle' families can no longer afford to keep their ponies and that they may be ending up at the knackers yard, where they are worth more than when sold on as pets.

Horsemeat can be halal (according to the Islam helpline) but it certainly cannot be Kosher as the animal does not have a cloven foot.

As Nigel says - slightly richer than beef and on the way to venison.  Less fatty than beef (should that be the kind of thing that matters to you.)I love it and take every opportunity to partake - usually in France.I was quite disappointed when the Findus Lasagne withdrawal occurred as I would have happily popped out to collect a few for the freezer (risks from 'bute' poisoning notwithstanding of course...)

Delicious.I first had in in a restaurant near the Somme as the choice was 'steak' or (a much larger) beefsteak.It's, from memory, richer than steak almost akin to venison.  Mine was served with a green pepper sauce and frites which complimented it very well.Listening to Radio 4 this morning and sales of horsemeat have increased tenfold over the past week. Let's hope that they don't find any adulterated with beef :-)
