This won't be for everyone, but one technique that I've adopted is to have the board email me everytime a new post appears. Then I just simply click the link in the email and I am taken directly to the new message.A further refinement to this is that, once I am in a particular thread, I tend to read all the new messages in that thread in one visit. (This saves the time waiting for the new browser window to open each time.) Then, when I return to my emails to see what else has been posted I keep a mental list of the threads that I have already visited "this session" in my head and simply skip over further notifications for those threads.I know this will be way more anal than most people will want to be bothered with it (hey, I'm a computer programmer, and I think like that :-) ) but it is one way of making things slightly less time consuming.A further refinement is that I have setup my email reader to automatically filter off notifications from the board into a separate folder which I can choose to attend to or ignore until a more convenient time later so that they do not interrupt the current task at hand. (Or even just delete all notifications without viewing the messages at all.)
