unsual objects in the sky on new years eve

Did anyone else see this but on the 31st Dec 2012, it must have been around 12.30am, i looked out of the window and I saw this object in the sky with an orange glow. I thought is it an aeroplane or fireworks but as the object came nearer, i had to stick my head out the window and it sort of looked like an hot air balloon without the balloon and there was a flame, colour of orange. I then spotted more and more of these. It lasted for about 10 minutes and then they were all gone. So either it was some sort of new years eve celebration or something unusual. Did anyone notice this in Ealing.

Yes, it is still there.(No chance of it going up in smoke under the current precipitation conditions I'd have thought. (I jest.))

Re  massive insurance claim for new roof and partial rebuild.            xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx and what's more Nigel is the insurers  would be fully entitled to  use their rights of subrogation against the senders ( individual or collective ) and get reimbursement  for their payout. Anyone who releases these objects are being very thoughtless to say the least and could be of questionable intent?.

I saw some from High Wycombe, which is not a concrete jungle but is surrounded by farms and forests. Plenty of fireworks as well. But then there are plenty of brainless idiots dumping rubbish that can cause injuries, including glass bottles that can cause fire if the sun ever shines on them.

Chinese sky lanterns, petition from the RSPCA to ban them - http://www.rspca.org.uk/getinvolved/campaigns/wildlife/chineselanterns the people that sell them say that they are safe ??

Don't know but my former work colleague who lived in the beautiful village of Long Crendon in Aylesbury Vale had a thatched house (way bigger than a cottage). Back in 1990 he spent just under £30,000 having a full rethatch including the mandatory peacock on the apex at one end. It looked magnificent - for the all too brief period that it lasted.Cue village firework show only three weeks later and, you gussed it, stray roacket meets new thatch meets massive insurance claim for new roof and partial rebuild.Although pretty, those fire lanterns scare me as the owner of a home with a large proportion of flat roof.

Quite a common sight. Hot air paper laterns/balloons with a spirit burner underneath.They look pretty but God knows what would happen if one landed on a flat roof.
