Which are the best three restaurants in Ealing?  And why please?

Upmarket and not cheap, but definitely Charlotte's Place and Kiraku near Ealing Common Tube Station. The lunch at Charlotte's is fantastic value for quality.Third place would be a tie between Santa Maria Pizzeria and Kerbisher and Malt, serving the most exquisite pizzas and fish and chips at very reasonable prices (for the quality)

I forgot to mention La Siesta, the splendid tapas bar near the top of Bond Street W5. Its a simple place, which becomes pretty crowded in the evenings, where the food is interesting: mainly tapas dishes with paella options(have to wait for 30mins while they cook the paellas - which are splendid). Wine is mainly Spanish with a comprehensive cocktail list - we go for the Spanish house wine - good value. They have many offers each day - we've always had a good meal experience at La Siesta.  Bon appetit.

Agree with your selection of eateries in Ealing Emily, but we've never tried Papillon yet - must do soonest, its comes highly recommended by others. The Walpole serves fabulous breakfasts, but also opens for marvellous dinners on Fri and Sat evenings only too.Yes, we enjoy the opinion of others too - we're fortunate to have a reasonable variety of eating possiblities locally. My favourites...1.Okawari, Bond Street - http://www.okawari.co.uk. Great value for money, big portions, Japanese comfort food and fun sunken tables. Unlimited green tea only costs 50p. They serve sushi as well as rice/noodle/tempura dishes. 2. Ealing Park Tavern - for special occasions3. Pizza places - Momento in Northfields or Santa Maria Pizzeria. Santa Maria's pizza is better but it's small and can't be booked, whereas Momento has a more relaxed atmosphere and pretty good pizza. My favourite cafe's - Papillion in Northfields for a good value, tasty selection of sandwiches, soups, breakfasts and cakes, The Walpole cafe for the biggest and best fry ups in Ealing. I used to love the Green Mango cafe before the riots closed them down. Thanks for starting this topic, it's been interesting reading everyone's answers!

Have to admit that I never thought I would post anyting terribly positive about food in The Fox as I agree the few times I have tried it previously have not been worthy of endorsement but credit where it's due.  I had virtually the same meal a couple of weeks ago in The Kent at twice the price and half as good.  My sister who lives in Green Lane seems to think that the kitchen in the Fox was rented out to miscellaneous caterers but that the manager/owner whoever is now back in charge of the kitchen.  Don't know if that's true and don't know if it will be any good if I try it again but I will definitely give it another go.

Has anyone tried the food in the new Hotel Xanadu? I've been there for a few (very delicious!) cocktails but not yet eaten. The menu looks very inticing though.

Of all the splendid restaurants in Ealing I'd mentioned, I've forgotten to name an old favourite - we've been frequenting it for almost 30 years...Retina and Moussaka on the Uxbridge Rd, near Culmington Road! Maria and Angelo have been there for a long time - the food's not the greatest, but there's always plenty to eat and the atmosphere there is always warm. Cheers!

On the face of it the parking is not that great.The pub itself only has space for three (or sometimes two depending upon the ability of the drivers!) cars, but I have never had a problem parking as there is usually a space close by in the adjacent road.

I like The Fox a lot - great beer and they are very dog friendly, but I find the food can be patchy.I regularly have their burger.Sometimes it's great.  Sadly, often it isn't.Why do I keep ordering the same thing if it's patchy?  because when it's good it's really good, so I live in hope...  :-)

Some members of my family really rate THE FOX in Hanwell. I'm sure its good, but for me THE VIADUCT in Hanwell(near Ealing Hospital) is one of the best.Other opinions?

I have eaten in many local pubs at lunchtime and usually have more to moan about than to praise but, yesterday, against my better judgment because I have tried it before, I found myself in The Fox in Hanwell and I had definitely the best and most reasonably priced lunch I have had in a long time.  I had liver and bacon, mash etc., for £7.75 and it was fabulous.  My two sisters had lamb chop with homemade chips and salad.  There were 3 huge really delicious lamb chops per portion for £8.75.  Without doubt the best pub lunch for the money.

Following on with good eateries in this fair borough of ours, whadya think of these:Papaya in Northfield Ave, at the end of Elers Road. A fabulous SriLankan restaurant - top end Sth Indian cuisine - some dishes are particularly hot(chilli tastingwise) - different from your Indian curries of which we are blessed with many. Grove Cafe, 65 The Grove W5(in the hinterland of Ealing Broadway Shopping Centre) - quirky cafe(doubles as an art gallery) - not into Polish cuisine but I'm told their Zurek and Bortsch(spelling?)soups and their Bigos, Golabki and Golonka(pork hock with saukraut) are tasty. Simple and reasonable wine list and dozens of exotic cocktails at v/reasonable prices.Viaduct Pub(towards Ealing Hospital) - good solid food at fair prices(considering its a gastropub). Nice comfortable dining room.North China in Acton(well its nearly in Ealing) - Chinese resaurant of a special type.We've tried each of these fairly recently and we'd happily go again - can't be fairer than that! Whadya think?

This is the only one I have used in Southall.A few friends go on about the 'Brilliant' but I cannot comment on it - if you give it a whirl, keep us posted...Happy currying!!

RobertCan you recommend a couple of restaurants in Southall please?There were a couple I used to frequent many years ago but when they closed I found the ones in Ealing were of equal quality (and nearer to where I live).  However, I love the buzz in Southall and would be happy to start going there to eat again.

I'm not going to limit mine to 3 but my personal favourites:1) Papaya, Northfields Avenue - great Sri Lankan food!!2) Urban Karahi, Greenford Avenue - fantastic menu and tandoori lamb chops that are quite simply to die for3) Golden Dragon, Pitshanger Lane - this is take away only, but am yet to find a Chinese (and I have tried Maxim's amongst others) that gives such fabulous Chinese food4) Haven Arms, Haven Lane - there is NO better Sunday roast offering for me anywhere in the Borough and yes, I have tried them all!!5) Wine & Mousaka, Haven Green - great Greek food - another notable is Atlantis on Pitshanger Lane6) West Kebab, Pitshanger Lane - there is a stigma associated with burgers / kebabs but West Kebab is not your run of the mill artery clogging fare. Quality lean meat is offered and is quite simply sumptuous. Give it a try!!7) Persian Palace, Uxbridge Road – Nigel Brooks mentioned this but I want to endorse too. The food is devilishly good and quite rightly benefits from great business. I asked myself why the neighbouring restaurants are not as busy and all I can think is that the Persian Palace was there first, people tried it and liked it and have stuck with it – prepared to be corrected thoughThat's my two penneth's worth anyway...

That's interesting.  Over the last few weeks, we have walked past THE PERSIAN PALACE in the evenings and noticed it was packed every night. Whereas, other Persian(Iranian) restaurants nearby(and there are many now) werne't so full. It must be popular.

My daugfhter's amateur dramatic group used the Persian Palace for their post-performance 'bash' when the regular place (which had changed hands) wanted an exhobitant amount to stay open an hour longer.Over 40 went (Persian Palace were aware of the numbers) and she is still commenting on how lovely the staff were, totally unphased, the quality of the food and how they were made to feel so welcome. It is now their new 'regular' place.

Agreed Alex, the aroma of grilled meat is tempting and I do relish the smell from their specially made flat bread - yum, slavering over my keyboard as we speak - not a pretty sight!

If you want Indian, go to Southall. The local custom there means the resturant will never pull a fast one in terms of quality and quantity, because those locals would not keep them in business. True Indian food!Btw, I have tried pretty much EVERY Indian restuarnt in Ealing and non of them can even start to challenge the authentic ones in southall!(sorry, didn't answer your question, but hopefully helpful!)

I think we're most fortunate in Ealing regarding the variety of good'ish eateries in our borough. These are a few my family and I've enjoyed recently:La Cantina in Bond St - simple Italian foood.Also, the excellent new fish place in Bond Street called William's Seafood Grill - excellent seafood stew and grilled fish. Not to forget that other new'ish fish 'n chip resaurant Kerbishly & Malt, near the Empire cinema on Uxbridge Rd - limited menu but fresh fish and a simpole wine list.Ealing Mangal, arguably the best Turkish(Kurdish) around - superb salads, fresh kebabs and oustanding baklavas - limited Turkish wines and raki - good value.

Happy New Year!My 3 favourite have to be:1) Charlottes Place - agree that its expensive in the evening so i tend to stick to the lunch deal. Love that they do wine by the carafe too.2) Hare and Tortoise - Basic and swift but such tasty food we usually go once a week. Great sushi and noodle dishes, with a place like this who needs wagamammas! 3) Piccolo - There is a great choice of italian restaurants in Ealing but this one takes it for me due to the great pizza and fresh fish dishes.Also love Butlers Thai, Karaam, Cote and Pizza on the Green

I guess there are two answers to the question; the first is to name the best and the second is to name the ones at which you enjoy the complete food experience. The first one is objective, the second one purely subjective.Being objective only, I feel it might be: Charlotte's Place on Ealing Common, The Walpole on St Mary's Road, followed perhaps by Lisa's of Pitshanger Lane. Three Ealing restaurants offering good food well cooked.Being subjective and allowing for having not only a good meal experience, but value for money, tasty food well served with friendly efficiency etc, it might be: Osteria del Portico at Ealing Green, La Siesta of Bond Street W5 and possibly Cote on Ealing Green.Honourable mentions later on.

I reckon we are lucky in Ealing.Sooooo many great places and it depends what you want.i would say :Charlotte's Place : Amazing food, REALLY GREAT staff, nice atmosphere. i am going there tonight!! (starving now. )Pizza on the Green: Great Pizza, nice location, Lovely staff.I also want to give a shout out for the little Tapas place in Bond street. The food is great, sorry - don't know the name of it!

Hardly a cast iron recommendation as I have yet to eat there but have heard good reports on the updated menus at the newly refurbished Duke of Kent. Certainly the ambience and decor have improved and the place is bustling.  Drinks (which I have tried) are still on the expensive side for a suburb pub though.

Interesting to see votes for places I think are dreadful. I love how subjective life can be. For what it's worth...1. Charlotte's Place - wouldn't be surprised to hear about a Michelin star in the near future. It's evening prices mean its for special occasions only but they are special.2. Maxims - great food, amazing ribs and great atmosphere. A moody manageress but you only see/speak to her when you walk in.3. Retsina & Moussaka - a genuine family run Cypriot restaurant that serves lovely food in HUGE portions. Very friendly people indeed. And they serve Keo!Honourable mentions for Zayka, Hare & Tortoise, Ealing Park Tavern, Sunday roast at the Red Lion and the ever improving La Cantina on Bond St.  Had the Xmas carvery at the New Inn this year and it was blinding.

Yes Keith, I'm aware that the excellent Haweli at 127 Uxbridge Road W13 has been mentioned twice already, though I think its near neighbour a couple of doors away is slightly better imoYes I too have preferences about Ealing restaurants, but I love reading those of other fellow readers first, before offering my opinion - other peoples views are so much more interesting than me own!

I would struggle to name 3 restaurants in Ealing = never really use any of them more than once but, the North China is fantastic maybe because it has been owned and run by the same family for at least 35 years to my knowledge and the standards have never dropped it's far better than Maxims in my opinion.  As for the New Inn - I had a really good meal in there once (belly pork etc) so good I returned and ordered the same again - it was vile!  Nevertheless returned once more thinking anyone could have a bad day but sadly 3rd time it was equally disgusting.  Will never try it again.I understand that the owner/cook of the Walpole cafe is actually a micheline star chef who opens the Walpole as an actual restaurant on Friday/Saturday evenings.  I am told the food is very good and evidently portions are huge (not sure that's a good thing) probably worth a try for a change.  I think you may have to book.

My three would be:1. Star and Anchor, on the basis of its fantastic (and reasonably priced) Chateaubriand alone.2. Maxim. Best ambience in town and excellent grub, though standards have slipped slightly of late. 3. Momento. Only a pizzaria, I know. But it's a great one.By the way, has anyone been to that new Koobla place on Bond Street?

Monty's south Ealing, never anything but good food and service.Lisa's Pitshanger Lane, lovely people, great food.Not a restaurant but the 'pub grub' at the Rose and Crown is hard to beat.Never, ever going to Charlotte's again after their obscenely priced £85 Christmas lunch. Don't care how good the food is, that's a simple delusion of granduer and blatant profiteering.

In no particular order:Atari YaMaxim'sNorth China(not in Ealing but in the borough)Haweli in West Ealing(that's 4,sorry)Having made my choice it is only fair to say I haven't been to many others in Ealing for a few years but all these are pretty good imho.
