Accidents on Greenford Flyover & Roundabout

I'm blown away by the number of accidents each week that occur on the either the Greenford Flyover / Roundabout. It's quite astonishing how often this happens and wonder whether anyone has any reasons as to why ? This obviously causes traffic misery to the A40 and North Circ - any ideas what can be done (if anything) to make improvements that would reduce the number of accidents ?

I used to drive daily over the Greenford flyover towards Uxbridge for over two years, and saw accidents on the opposite side on a weekly basis, sometimes daily basis, nearly all caused by drivers driving too close to the car in front, not allowing for any stopping distance. Most accidents are caused by dangerous driving.

Much of the problem at Hanger Lane, Greenford, and Northolt is caused by drivers trying to jump the queue by deliberately driving in the wrong lane until the last possible moment, then blocking lanes while they attempt to force their way in to the correct lane. In other words, dangerous driving.A few nights ago I was walking beside the Western Avenue from Wales Farm Road towards Victoria Road and saw two eastbound cars jump the red light at Gypsy Corner. The next change of lights another two cars crossed on the red. By the next time the lights changed to red I had crossed Victoria Road and was standing with my back to the oncoming traffic and facing the traffic lights from the other side. Another two cars crossed on the red, only the second turned on the blues, pulled alongside the first, and gave the driver a pre-Christmas present.

Making Greenford Road a Red Route wouldn't necessarily result in two-lane freeflow, or even (more realistically at peak traffic times) two-lane queue storage - one of the cardinal principles of the Red Route network was accommodating the reasonable needs of ALL road users including property frontagers, by including reasonable provision of kerbside parking and/ or loading bays (or 'boxes' as they are termed on the Red Route network) wherever possible without gumming up the works. Thus the existing parking bays (NB among other needs for those there is at least one GP surgery on that stretch whose carborne patients would have problems if they were unable to park nearby) would be likely to remain, and merely replacing the yellow waiting restrictions with red line stopping restrictions would do litle if anything to help.There is no one specific problem at this junction complex, rather a number of problems, mostly inherent in the site-constrained layout and not susceptible to easy remedy.

Cue more accidents and congestion.From a TfL website alert."Greenford Flyover on the A40 will be closed from Monday 24 December until Tuesday 1 January, in order to undertake essential bridge maintenance work. "

The problem is cause by the tailback in the Greenford Road and the fact that the roundabout itself gets glogged up and those drivers that do not want to go into the Greenford road but towards Greenford or on the slip road to join the A40 have to snake their way through.One solution to this would be to put the whole lenght of the Greenford road from Greenford to the junction past the railway bridge as a red route, even if only up to 19:00 thus allowing two lane of traffic for that stretch.The other solution is really down to driver courtesy in not getting into the roundabout if the exit road is not clear thus leaving other traffic to circulate safely.

I know what you mean, but regardless of whether the lanes do narrow in actuality or not there is certainly a 'virtual' narrowing in response to all the traffic movements occurring as people make for the slip roads or attempt to join the main road from the roundabout.

>>BR>> wonder whether anyone has any reasons as to why ?>>AH>>It could be psychological, but I always feel that the lanes become marginally narrower as the A40 becomes the Greenford Flyover.  This is most noticeable travelling east.  But, as I say, it could just be my warped perception.

Spooky - the second I post this I get an alert telling me that the A40 is down to 1 lane w'bound due to an accident on the Greenford Flyover!
