Smelliest English cheese ?

What is the smelliest and most tasty English(or British) cheese please?The reason for this strange question is that a friend of ours is coming home for Christmas, after spending the last decade in Japan. When asked what he liked and missed after ten long years of exile, he said, he loved the fresh fish, the saki, the high-speed trains system and the politeness of the Japanese people - the thing he missed the most was a good strong smelly English cheese with a few glasses of bitter!Any suggestions and where in Ealing could we get him some really good cheese? I know there's Waitrose, but they wouldn't understand what I'm getting at. Thanks.

Keith, you'll find w7emporium at 60B Boston Road, Olde Hanwell, W7 3TR. It's between a pub and a unique bicycle shop.

With a choice of two local shops specialising in cheese, there's no need to look outside Ealing. Cheddar Deli and w7emporium will almost certainly have something to fit the bill and you can support a local business at the same time. I didn't know about w7emporium, which sounds a great addition to Hanwell, but find Cheddar Deli wonderful.

That's a tough one...there are many stinky ones!  Oxford Isis is pretty pungent, as is stinking bishop and some of the blues, especially ewes milk blue.  I own a cheese shop / deli and kitchen at 60B Boston Road, Olde Hanwell called the w7emporium.  We have a large selection of artisan cheeses, chutneys and local micro brewery ales & porters too.  Come in to say hello, we are licensed so you can have a drink while you taste the cheese.  Claire      w7emporium@gmail.com

Agree - Cheddar Deli - can't go wrong there. Samples always available and very helpful staff.

Absolutely go to Cheddar Deli - a wonderful shop and they don't just stock cheeses either. Some fab italian salamis and unlike that other deli on Northfields, they are a pleasure to do business with.

Definitely try the Cheddar Deli in Northfield Avenue. Great shop and always full of interesting information about cheese.

There are some varietis of Lancashire Tasty and Lancashire Blue that are pungent and very strong.Bamber's Cheese Shop in Preston has a wonderful range.

But sooooo expensive (roughly 30-40% more than most other shops).Melbury and Appleton in Islington will allow you to collect from their warehouse (£10 minimum order).Stinking Bishop there (it is all the same and only made in one place in Glocestershire) is a whopping £13/kg cheaper than Paxton and Whitfield.

Dorset Blue Vinny (ie veiny) long had a reputation as outstandingly pungent. Have to say such as I've had over the years was ok but seemed a bit tame to me - but maybe mass-produced imitations of the real thing. You need to go to a real well-established specialist cheese shop (can't recommend any because haven't time, money or inclination to bother) rather than the likes of Waitrose to have any chance of the genuine article, I suspect.
