Ealing Broadway Shopping Centre

It's great to see the Broadway Centre full of shoppers. But why oh why do the owners of the Centre rent out empty stores on short term lets (eg Goldsmiths and Sports Direct) to market traders selling tat! This does nothing to promote Ealing Broadway as a quality shopping destination. Am all for looking for creative solutions to solve our current retail challenges, but this isn't the answer!

It does seem odd that all the underclass lowlife seem interested in is Mobile phone shops, amusement arcades,and betting shops. All the vital daily needs catered for there then.

Ealing Broadway Centre is allegedly up for sale again. Maybe the new owners in 2013 will address some of these tricky issues.You won't meet anyone who knows what UK retail will look like in the future.

I agree.  And what's with all the betting shops opening up everywhere?!  First there was the Ladbrooks that opened near the station opposite Haven Green near Star Bar and now one has popped open just round the corner near WH Smiths and Accessorize!  Is there really THAT much demand for gambling at the moment?!  For me, betting shops drag down the 'look' of a town so these aren't helping Ealing in that respect.  And a shame the little Topshop closed (thank you Westfield, you finally got 'em!) and a discount footwear shop is opening.  A reasonable current footwear shop I think but still, why does it always have to be discount?!  Times are tough at the mo but these discount outlets never last and I am sure it will probably disappear as soon as it opens.

Tat sells and makes a lot of fast cash. If you were a shopkeeper in the current climate, a £1 shop is a better bet than a posh shop that has staff as ornaments and expensive items that only sell to a small market.

Last year there was a pop-up Past Times which probably does well at Christmas (with people buying presents rather than for themselves). I agree that we have enough shops selling cheap tat.

Gerry, am no retail expert, but speaking as someone who wants to see Ealing Broadway flourish, they need to attract more quality brands into the Centre (they have just done it with Wagamama's) so it can be done. I think pop-up shops are a great way forward as long as they are presented well and selling good quality products.
