Sadly 'bombsight' does not show the thousands of incendiary bombs that fell causing so much damage including the loss of St. Saviour's church on The Grove and a number of shops in west Ealing.The communal bomb shelters are still just behind Wyke Gardens in Elthorne Park

I understand that Ealing Common had two shelters. And they still exist.  If you look on the grass at the junction of The Common and Uxbridge Road, there are some concrete slabs which outline the shelter underneath.  Also, on the piece of green adjacent to Ealing Common Station, where the toilets used to be, is another example.

Interesting - Ealing got a bit of a blitz in WWII.My question is related to WWII - was open land in Ealing, like Walpole Park and Ealing Common, ploughed up for growing essential foods like potatoes, beans and corrots? Were community bombshelters built on these open spaces in WWII? Present residents parents  may remember?
