New Italian deli

I notice that one has opened in the Grove, grandly called Antonius of Apulia. Anyone been? Doesn't strike me as a site with much passing trade, something that drove the rather good restaurant on the corner out of business a few years ago.

I'm confused.  Is the new deli in the Grove at the Grove Cafe? Or have I got the wrong end of the stick?

Just a quick update:"Antonius of Apulia" 73 The Grove, W5 5LL is now open Monday-Saturday 10.00am to 6.00pm and Sunday 11.00am to 5.00pm.

hi Jerry. We don't carry fresh bread yet, but it is something we want to do. We're working on it. [We're now a pick up point for the Edible Ealing fruit and veg box scheme, though, and they do fresh bread from Aston's Organic Bakery (in London NW2). That scheme is roughly fortnightly and only on Fridays, so admittedly limited. (Disclosure: I am part of the Edible Ealing team of volunteers!)] We've got those big green Bella di Cerignola olives (and the smaller brownish Leccino olives, both from Apulia) and you are always welcome to try before you buy. We don't know about salt beef from Italy (or even Southern Italy, our focus)! Were you referring to Bresaola?

Cafe Grove is open serving great food, big portions at very reasonable prices. If you've got  an interest in cycling in Ealing - whether you are a cyclist or disapprove of how the council is making more provision for cyclists - Ealing Cycling Campaign will welcome you to their monthly meetings. Meetings at Cafe Grove are held on the first Wednesday of each month at 7.30pm from January onwards.

The couple who ran Noughts & Crosses bought a B&B at Milborne Port in Dorset.  I have had some wonderful w/ends there enjoying their food & hospitality.Unfortunately, they have now retired - much missed.

Naughts & Crosses was a fine restaurant and very much missed. Gilbie's was OK but as you suggest, seemed to go downhill and disappear into outer darkness - sad, 'cos we need good local eateries.Haven't had an occasion to try Antonio of Apulia yet - we tend to frequent Carluccio's.  We'll try it pronto and give it a few more visits before forming an opinion.

The owners of  Noughts and Crosses, which was a very good restaurant, moved to Dorset to run a "country house hotel'. It was taken over by Gilbeys, who have (had?) a restaurant in Amersham, I think, but the new people running it were nowhere as near as good.  It went downhill, slowly at first and then pretty rapidly, until they disappeared overnight.I hope everyone has checked out Antonio of Apulia  and found something nice there!

It was indeed and was the restaurant thay featured in the 'dodgy gold bracelets/ fake heart attack' episode of Only Fools and Horses.If I recall the owners moved down to the west country to run an hotel.

Was that good restaurant on the corner called Noughts and Crosses? It was some years ago and it was a nice eatery. What ever happened to the restaurant? It used to be very popular, so-much-so one had to book especially at weekends or there was no room at the inn!

Hello everyone! I am working at "Antonius of Apulia" at 73 The Grove, W5 5LL. Nice to read your positive comments. We are open Tuesday through Saturday now (and we're contemplating Sunday and Monday openings as well). We're covering the afternoon school run. Antonio, the shop owner, is from Santeramo in Colle, Apulia (Puglia) and has spent the last seven years importing olive oils and other foods (many organic) from a cooperative of more than 1000 farmers. His youngest brother manages the cooperative in Apulia. After supplying small independent butchers, fishmongers, delis and health food stores as a wholesaler (and running outdoor market stalls in Barnes and Oxford as a stallholder), Antonio decided to open his first retail shop. We'll save the rest of the details for your next visit!

They would surely do better to be open when the yummy mummies are dropping their kids off at the primary school, or picking them up. That road is crammed with 4X4s at those times.

It's a really good shop - it has everything you could want for making a first class pasta and is quite reasonably priced.  Everything - or almost everything - comes from the owner's home region in Italy and he can tell you its life story! There are several kinds of olive oil, all organic, lots of different pastas, herbs, olives (big fat green ones, really nice). It's not open a lot - Thursday, Fridays and Saturdays from 3pm to 7pm I think. Best thing that's happened to The Grove in years, and definitely worth a short detour if you're in the centre of Ealing. Fingers crossed for its survival.

Well the Silver Grove don't have to sell too much at their prices but their work is very good.Is Cafe Grove still there, the last few times I went by they were closd at lunchtime. Their pierogi was great and I liked the way they supported local artists with their exhibitions.As to the other shops, they are either specilaised or small enough to be responsive and survive.

It's a funny old stretch of shops. My son goes to school at the end of the grove and I walk along there when I drive. I did notice a deli had opened but was tearing after my son at the time! I've no idea how the businesses survive there.
