I always liked the shops in West Ealing - a wide variety of food, plus a great butcher and fishmonger. I hardly ever went to Ealing Broadway.

There seem to be a few whingers complaining about West Ealing. OK, its not the best shopping area, but we like it - there are some excellent outlets run by interesting people selling a wide range of appealing products - foodstuffs and household gear.And while we're at it, thanks to Eric A. Leach(don't know the man) and others on WEN, its becoming a good area to shop and live - well done Mr Leach, we're with you.

RE  Perhaps not.          xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx well bearing in mind  that sort of  behaviour by the shop owners there was prevalent and very noticeable for very many years, it would surely  be intersting why  it was all done away with. The change was so great that I had to ask where all the previous establishments had gone ( as I was looking for a perticular one ) and eventually went into one place where it seemed the owner was on the till, asked him  and was told they had all gone. I wish now I had asked him why, as to where, looks as though some have relocated  in Greenford, Hanwell and West Ealing?. So is their sojourn in those places likely to be of limited duration?

RE to go Fruit & Veg stall spotting around Greenford.        xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx it would be interesting Bernadette  to find out why such " establishments " were removed from Southall along both sides of the Uxbridge Rd. Maybe it was felt they dragged the ambience of the area down?.

What puzzles me is the huge numbers of fruit & veg shops/stalls in Greenford many of which are open into the small hours. Can't understand how they all manage to stay in business selling the same merchandise, and  stackIng  their stuff across the pavements way beyond the shop fronts... makes the area very scruffy...

Forty years ago I was a retail area manager and we had a small concession store inside the old 'are you being served' department store called I think Rowse's. At that time West Ealing was really run down. Today it is not a place to find trendy boutiques but a good everyday shopping centre. I use it several times a week. Lidl was a great arrival and now I rarely visit Tesco.  I use Iceland, Poundworld, 99p shop, Wilkinsons and several of the fruit an veg shops ( Vine tomatoes 99p a kilo) I also use the shops in Northfields avenue including Parker's bakery and certainly would not consider it run down but alive and active.Some of the forum posters whould try living in provincial cities. I did and within 6 months I moved back to Ealing. Dreadful public transport, closed down shops, and a feeling of a city fasy asleep. Give me London and Ealing any time.

Re  competition in the form of Lidl are charging            xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx    off hand, no, but I find some vegetables bought from this organision and the other German one,do not last very long, brocolli in particlar and onions  often go soft  quite soon.  I often wonder if their lower prices are because they buy  stuff which is nearer the end of it's life?.

Yep - for example, onions in Waitrose 90p / kg.  (£1.10 /kg if you want them in a polythene bag!)Onions in every greengrocer / mini-supermarket in Hanwell (and probably West Ealing as well - I don't know, I didn't check those) 37.5p / kg when bought as a 4kg string mini-sack.well worth the bother.I don't know what the immediate 'big-supermarket' competition in the form of Lidl are charging. Anybody know?

Re Daniels not in the Daniels family? I think it is.             xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx      the reason why I possibly thought otherwise is because  the store now bears little resmblance to what/how it was before. No members of the Daniels family in there ,nor in fact any indigenous persons at all?.

That is interesting, Eric. I wsn't aware that the Daniel family operated outside Ealing. The things that we lost with the Daniel West Ealing manoeuvre include the cafe on the top of Daniel's which did English breakfast and tea properly.

Perhaps I was being too sweeping in trying to get my message across.What I should have said was as far as I know the family firm of Daniel is still operating at 3/4 retail sites in the UK and so it's highly likely that Daniel in West Ealing is owned by the Daniel family.

Eric,What you may not know is that not all Co-op stores are owned by the Co-op itself, instead they are franchised. The franchisees are allowed to set their own prices and employ who they will, hence the truly dreadful Co-op in South Ealing. Here, the "family" is really nasty and treats the shoppers like dirt.

Daniels not in the Daniels family? I think it is. The clue is in the name. You know all M&S stores are actually owned by M&S.When the Daniels family took out a 25 year lease on its current smaller West Ealing store it was blindingly obvious that they were never going to occupy the first two floors of the residential block they built on the much larger historic Daniels family site. Whether Councillors on the Planning Committee knew this at the time is anybody's guess.

The only shop I ever need to frequent in West Ealing  is the little knitting dept. In Daniels. It's the only place around for a good selection of knitting wools and patterns. The salesman is really nice and has been there for many years. Hope it stays there for many more ...

Anything is better than an empty shop. Al jazeera (I've never been in it) must be serving a purpose or it wouldn't survive. There aren't many empty shops in west ealing. In fact when I drove through Hanwell broadway I notice they dont have any/many empty shops, and a few new ones. I wonder if the free parking at lidl has made a difference there? I know its not Northfields or Pitshanger but its surviving. Maybe evryone should take a fresh look at places like W Ealing and Hanwell they might find a few new shops they could use.

We are all grappling with the change to population but most I know and most who post on these websites take a positive attitude. Looking no further than rocks and waves will not help Mr Price. Well whingers - you asked, so I'll tell you.For six years I've worked for West Ealing Neighbours and we have brought about some improvements. But we clearly needed some more oomph to make a difference. So along came the 2011 Localism Act. A West Ealing Centre Neighbourhood Forum started in May this year, under the auspices of the Act. We are creating a spatial plan for the centre of West Ealing. The forum stakeholders include the Police, the NHS, West Ealing Traders Association, St John's School, St John's Church, St James Church, Kingsdown Residents Association, Dean Gardens Residents Association, Green Man Lane Residents Association, Star & Anchor pub, Wine & Mousaka restaurant, Age UK, Ealing Community Volunteer Service, Waitrose West Ealing, Pathways, Save Ealing Centre, Ealing Passenger Transport Users Group, West Ealing Women's Institute, Ealing Arts+Crafts, and two local Councillors.When we have jumped through all the Government's hoops of accreditation, external inspection and local referendums by 2014 the forum will have created the legal plan as to how the centre of West Ealing will develop in a way which will benefit all those who work and live in the neighbourhood.The next forum meeting will be held in St John's Church on Monday 19 November starting at 6:15 pm. We will be very pleased to welcome you and you can see and hear what progress we are making.

Spot on Gerry, actually there are two fish shops.Pretty much everything you could ever need foodwise is available around there.So much better than Northfields Avenue, which is looking so run down these days.

Dunno about the rest of you, but I rather like the variety and numerous ethnic shops in West Ealing. My family and I particularly love the fresh baklavas in The International Stores bakery section in back of the shop.And the wet fish shop close by.

West Ealing is beyond repair having been taken over. This will happen everywhere as one by one, every area will be invaded and turned into shambolic bazaar type markets and cheap shops/hovels.....say good bye to once nice retail areas with decent quality outlets ....get used to it !!

Actually Al Jazeera the TV station is pretty good. Their coverage of the FA Cup is far superior to ITV. Their pundits are more knowledgeable and the presenters much better. So don't knock it. If you end up getting a better service then maybe "Al Jazeera" will become a name for quality!!

Every high street has an abundance of Pound Shops, Pawnbrokers, phone shops etc.. It's not unique to West Ealing.Anyone actually been in the Al Jazeera Mall or are you afraid of places with foreign names?
