The magazine “Altogether better” was first published around 2008 (only few hundreds copies) and it was then circulated not around the borough but among the business community in order to attract companies to move in Ealing and fill up all the empty office spaces which had been left empty for a long time.  This was at a time when Ealing was acclaimed to be the best run council in the country and we were right in the middle of revamping all our major and minor shopping centres, our roads and pavements were being resurfaced at the tune of over £6M per year, our parks and roads were free of litter, rubbish, graffiti and full of flowers. This result of this exercise proved to be quite a success and along the Uxbridge road offices were once again being occupied and new one built. With regards to Around Ealing, what really gets to me is that, whilst in opposition, the Labour group kept criticising us time and time again, both in and out of the council chamber, about the money we were wasting in “advertising ourselves” questioning time and time again how much this “propaganda campaign”, cost the ratepayers and they committed themselves that, once regained power, they would slash the publication of Around Ealing. It is worth to remember that during their previous administration they were publishing Around Ealing once a month as well. We proved time and time again that because of the income that we have managed to generate from advertisements, the cost was less than a can of coke. When they took control, truth to their words, they did ‘slash’ the number of publication from 12 to 4 per year, only to increase it again to the current 12.Once again the famous say: “do as I say but don’t do as I do” spring to mind here and hipocrisys reigns suprime.

It annoys because it’s pile of propaganda. Page 3 was enough for me.“We know the Borough is a great place”.Rubbish.Look at Southall and Hanwell, West Ealing and the sad bits of Ealing Centre. And I never enjoy trips to dreary Acton. Apart from our little scraps of “villages” e.g.Pitzhanger Lane most of the shops are such that you shop outside the Borough except for basics. Shabbiness and not greatness rules. Too many planning decisions are made which are reactive rather than proactive. Probably because too many Councillors have low standards. Also some of our Planning Officers have low standards. Enforcement stands out as being really weak which again raises the question about the poverty of vision in some of the Councillors, who can’t quite believe they are endowed with the status of being a Councillor.Value for money is top priority. So why publish this rag instead of putting the information into AR or writing the odd article for the Gazette.  Staff numbers have reduced. So why not say the start number was X and today’s number is Y. And just the same for the Council work carried out by the contractors. And then put real pounds and pence savings on those figures. Straight talking is what normal people want.Performance has improved on the things the Council are judged upon. That is by questions which have not basically been designed by residents, but by some quango. Questions raised during the temperature check were levelled mainly at young people. Why?When the Councillors on both sides engage publicly with each other then we shall know how democratic they are. When we know they all get regular training then their standards will rise When Senior Officers hold public meetings on a regular basis then we shall know what they are doing to make the Borough a better place. When we get open government Ealing people will have the chance to improve our Borough. It’s easier to access the Council online. Err, is it harder and take longer for non IT users to get access?Money is being spent on schools. Well they have to, but will class sizes increase? Upgrading Libraries. The Residents won their demands. Regen of Housing. Has to be done. Road expenditure. Instead of fiddling with making islands and other obstructions, just simply repair the roads and relay the pavements when necessary. Any other road money is not priority in a deep recession. Just stop it.Finally. Give us back the youth clubs and old peoples’ centres and give the young proper apprenticeships. And turn this Council into the best run Council in Outer london.
