91 Ealing Council Staff Earn More Than £100,000 a year

Councillor Phil Taylor in his often well researched blog (http://philtaylor.org.uk) informs us that in 2012  91 Council staff will earn more than £100,000/year. Incredibly this number actually increased from 90 of them in 2011.Doesn't this seem quite bizarre when Park Rangers, Envirocrime Officers, professional Librarians, grants to local voluntary bodes and benefit payments to the poor are all being cut - the large, very highly paid cadre of Council Officers has been increased?

Re you have an opinion on the effectiveness of         xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx      and also who assesses them,the quality and effectiveness of their work. And if there are these hordes of Management earning £100k plus, how many are just below that wage band. Seems to me there is a lot of profligacy in the Council chambers, a good flushing wouldn't go amiss. And as another poster suggested on another thread, there could well be many Councillors who were aware of what has been going on with the beds in sheds fiasco/disgrace, so IF that is the case, and almost bound to be, would it not be reasonable to assume many within the Council offices themselves were also aware?. Much digging and probing needs to be done. Question is , by whom?

Not in particular.I was attracted by the (now proven inaccurate) thread title.What does surprise me is that an organisation of this size needs 91 'senior' managers. In that number alone is the answer to whether or not the organisation is effective.

The 'move on' Phil referred to the gross inaccuarcy of the thread title.My focus would be on the number of 'senior officers' and their effectiveness, not a simple, hadline grabbing "look how much they earn".

Where Phil I would like you to move on to is to reveal how many senior to middle managers have had their jobs reviewed in a way that those people have been taken into a better salary grade. That's how the Council will have been able to circumvent the Coalition's pay freeze.

Nigel,Why move on?  The council halved some key front line services such as park rangers and envirocrime officers but when it came to the senior officer cadre of 91 people who cost on average £100K each, a total of £9.1 million a year, every year, they have managed a 5% cut.  The council lost 28% of its government grant but this has fed through into a mere 5% cut in senior management costs.  Let's not move on!

Nigel,It is nice of Eric to highlight my work but he maybe exaggerated a little when he chose his title.  If you ask the council about the cost of the top team and they include employer's NI the total figure is 91 people who cost £9.1 million.  That is £100K of cost each on average but this cost does include employer's NI and is an average.  Follow this link for more detail:http://philtaylor.org.uk/2012/04/council-senior-management-costs-rising-again/Phil

Name and (if appropriate) shame.There are only five 'directorates' in Ealing's organisation, from where do 91 'director level' slaries come?I am not one for the politics of envy but I would like to know what staff numbers and budgets (of our money) are controlled to justify these salaries.
