Yes, in 1066. They never left or were thrown out and their descendants still predominate in the larger landowning and ruling classes. When the Westminster House of Lords pass a parliamentary bill the decision is still announced in mediaeval French in the name of the monarch. And we still munber our monarchs, where more than one of the same first name, only from the Norman takeover in 1066 - eg there were at least two or three Kings Edward before 1066, so the ones we call Edward 1, 2, 3....8 should actually be 4.5.6.....11. So yes we sold out to the French in 1066, and the Northern English folk that tried to seriously fight the takeover were subjected to an intensity and extent of massacre and scorched earth which should be the envy of the likes of Assad of Syria.Just a few reflections provoked by your questions.
