The Town House

What's happening with what used to be the town house in Ealing Broadway - A Sold sign has gone up and workers are busy doing something.

Great news Metro bank are opening up in Ealing.I opened an account with them in Hounslow as they do free withdrawals while aboard but they also are open seven days a week with later hours. Simply ideas like free coin counting and making you feel welcome to see you.Present Ealing branch I'm doing them a favour giving them my money to hold onto.

Many good nights in there under age drinking when it was the feathers!!I think it was something else before The Town House.I am glad something is happening to the building it has been a blot for too long.  Indeed that stretch of Uxbridge Road from The Town House to M&S is dreadful,  filthy,  tatty "shops" and lowers the area which was once well heeled.  A friend who lived in Ealing all her life until 5 years ago returned last week and was stunned by how downhill Ealing Broadway has become.

The Feathers was a great pub and The Cellar Bar was heaving at the weekends. Great folk and blues acts used to jam there and it was always amusing at a time of Afghan coats and girls in flowing Biba dresses to see the local constabulary trying to blend in to catch the very occasional users of 'certain substances'. They were always easily identifiable by being the only ones there with short hair and in 'plain' clothes :-) The off-licence was also very good and one of the few places away from Earl's Court where you could get imprted Australian lagers rather than the pale 'brewed in the UK' imitations.

When I was a kid it was, from recollection, a Berni Inn. It was also bombed by the IRA I think in late 90s or early 00s (sometime when I had moved away anyway)

I remember this place when it was called The Feathers.I used to drink in the Royal Oak and The North Star but The Feathers never did seem very popular.

According to the plans on the Council website, Metro Bank are moving in there. Can't believe that no one could make the site work as a (respectable) public house.

The way Ealing's going, a pound shop I fear! Let's hope not. It was positive for me that the old Pie2 shop which was replaced by a pound shop, is now covnerting into a chain retailer (Maplins I think). Ealing needs pound shops like Britain needs rain....
