Recycling now being seperated at collection

I've been watching today's collection & plastics, paper, cardboard & glass are being collected seperately on one truck, similar to before.

By the end of July most residents will have witnessed the contents of the green box being tossed in all together (or heard it from their neighbours, as I did). So once the service is back to running properly in a few weeks, everyone will have to be re-instructed to sort their recycling once again.

What are the recycling rates in Southall?I would have thought poor because they have wheelie bins which do not encourage any sorting or separation of waste.Where I live many people have bought their own small dustbin so have somewhere to store their black sack until it is collected.  This has meant that our streets are so much tidier and cleaner.

Some residents?A contract that failed?. Wait until August or September or whenever? I want an excellent service. I shall settle for a good service.I don't do green waste because I recycle and need only a couple of trips to the dump each year and that is cheaper.Why should just the green waste customers benefit? I want my money back please.You are a photographer. Wonder what the streets are like in Southall or other deprived parts of the Borough?

GeorgeCllr Mahfouz announced they would compensate some residents for the inconvenience of the last few months. The details of how this would work were not shared with us, but it would be concentrated on those who recycle garden waste. Under its contract with Cornwall Council, Cory Environmental faces fines of £50 a household if fewer than 99.9% of collections are carried out"The report says in month two the fines start to kick in if the targets were not met.Now those wily Cornese knew a thing or two about striking a tough deal. What happened at Ealing Town Hall? Are they a soft touch? How many other Ealing contractors are on a gravy train?

As I understand it, Enterprise had three months of "grace" stipulated on the contract for the change over which meant that during this period they would not be 'penalised' or liable to compensate for loss or poor service to residents.As the three months expire at the end of June and that a proper service will not be in force untill end of July, one hopes, does it now means that as from the end of June the council will be able to claim compensation from Enterprise? And another thing: why are there two different collections undertaken for garden waste? One to pick up the old pink sacks at the same time as the other dry recycling collection and another one for the new green sacks on a seperate lorry later on?

Last night's Overview and Scrutiny Committee meeting was quite illuminating.  Three representatives of the contractor Enterprise were there along with council officers and the Labour councillor in charge, Bassam Mahfouz.  The Enterprise representatives at the meeting confirmed that as of today only 5 out of 10 of the required, custom-built “kerbside” vehicles (used to perform kerbside re-cycling of dry recycling from green boxes) have been delivered so far and that the whole fleet will not be in place until the end of July, some four months after the start of the main part of the contract.  It became clear from the answers that the temporary kerbside vehicles hired to fill this ordering gap proved to be inadequate for their task and full kerbside sorting of re-cycling was abandoned at the end of the second week of the contract and will not be resumed in full until the end of July resulting in the largest part of the borough’s residents’ sorting effort being wasted for four months.

Simon,I am afraid that in week 12 of the new contract Ealing is still mixing up people's carefully sorted dry re-cycling.  I saw it in my own road today and on the Chiswickw4 forum people are complaining that theirs has been mixed this week.  The new contractor did not have the vehicles required to undertake the contract at the start and the council have let them continue like this for 12 weeks.  I am sorry that their time and effort has been wasted.  This matter will be discussed at the Overview and Scrutiny Committee at or shortly after 8.15pm on Thursday in Committee Room 3 at the Town Hall.  Please come along and let the Labour administration know how displeased you are.  Agenda here: http://www.ealing.gov.uk/download/meetings/id/519/agenda_21062012

Simon,Glad to see that things are improving, this is week 8 of the new contract.  Certainly in my road it all got mixed up last week.  I am away this week so won’t have a chance to check.  The council published this paper yesterday.  http://www.ealing.gov.uk/download/meetings/id/378/item_14-environmental_services_contract_reviewIt shows (Table 1 on page 12) that the council’s contractor, Enterprise, will finally have a full fleet of “Kerbsiders” in place week commencing 11th June.  This means that normal recycling service will have been resumed 10 weeks after the start of the contract (if everything goes according to plan).  Pretty rubbish!

If you look at Mahfouz's website, the implication is that he wants kerb side sorting. Maybe that will happen in June when new lorries arrive. But he forgot to put a note to himself in his diary to tell the residents about the next steps concerning sepAration.
