Street cleansing

Judging by the vastly reduced number of posts the collection service seems to be settling down; either that or fingers have worn out from typing and patince has worn out.While the collectors actually picking the rubbish they drop when collecting is good; when, oh when, will many streets see a man (or woman) with a broom again.It's been over two weeks on Boston Road and driving a street sweeper at 10-15+ mph 'somewhere near' the gutters doesn't do anything for the pavements!

"I do hope someone conducts quality control checks."Nigel,during the previous administration these were conducted by an independent company. Unfortunately this administration does not like being scrutinised and one the forst thing they did when they took control was to dismiss the company and put check controls back in the hands of the contractors. Not very impartial is it?Not only that, but previously street were given the top A rate only when completely free not just of litter but also from grime and tables on how our street were rated were regularly published. Now all we are told by our dear Cllr Mahfouz is that, under his watchful eye, Ealing's streets are the cleanest that they have ever been. Unfortunately we do not have any evidence, apart from the contrary by looking at the state of our own street, to back his claim. Nor we have any idea of what the criteria used to rate the level of cleaniless is or indeed if they still do a ward by ward 'league' table. All I know is that my own street has not seen a broom in these last couple of years, apart from that of its residents when they cannot stand the state and sight of it any longer. We are also the ones that have to dislosge rubbish from drains to stop water from heavy rainfalls to flood our front garden and garages.

Can only agree Andy.We had a team of street cleaners yesterday (three of them).I do hope someone conducts quality control checks. I walk (badly) with a stick (or two) but I am damned sure that could push a broom far more efficiently than this bunch.The centre of the pavement is swept, after a fashion, but the edges and gutters look untouched.

The new refuse/recycling regime is a total 'f' up.  Let's just hope Ealing's residents don't have a short memory and they vote accordingly at the next council elections.

Jean,this was the case till a couple of years ago: i.e. street cleaning took place the day after refuse collection. The reason being that anything could affect the collection round: road works, flooding, burst pipe, accident and so on. If collections were delayed it did not interfear with street cleaning. It was this administration's idea to change it on the day of collection. However, considering that refuse collection and street cleaning are handled by the same contractor, why on earth can't they re-schedule the street cleaning for the day after - even if, as they claim, it is only going to be a 'temporary' arrangment, or till such time (June???) they have got their hands on the full quota of refuse truck?

They were litter picking in our road on Thursday BEFORE the black bags were collected (they were lying in the road at the time). The other recycling (plastics/paper/card/food) has not been collected.Surely it would be more sensible for the streets to be cleaned AFTER the Contractors had collected everything?Tin cans were lying on the road afterwards!

The street cleaner was on the street after the black bag collection but before the recycling collection this week (first week I've seen one).

Nigel, I was amazed to see 2 chaps armed with a broom and a dustbin when they swept our street in Acton last week!!!At the end of the day all we are asking for is clean streets, ALL recycled rubbish removed on the due day, and containers returned in 1 piece to us afterwards!I don't care who does it, just as long as the job is done to our satisfaction.
