Woman mugged on Picadilly line train - rush hour

Is it just me who thinks that this 'front page' (Acton W3) story is awful.  A woman is robbed on a rush hour train, people intervene yet still the scumbags escape - with her phone????  Am also going to post on ChiswickW4 and EalingW5 as this is a serious debate........have we become a spineless and selfish society, I'm alright jack cowards or..........? thoughts please...?

These are all good points and why we hope you'll check out StreetViolence.org as it lets people warn other about attacks and muggings, post witness appeals and thank passers-by who helped.  If you like it, please use it and tell others as it's being run by a small charity.  If you've got any comments they'll be welcome. "A terrible incident and I hope the woman is recovering from the shock of what happened on her normal commute home."Isn't that just part of it?  Most people if they are on their normal commute home are 'miles away' looking at their texts or reading the paper.  Watching but perhaps not seeing what is going on and trapped in a small space. I like the collaborative action in the pub above.  We have to try and speak up when being challenged to alert others and then hope that more people will intervene on our behalf. Lets try and all be more people.

Not saying that at all, the people who helped her were wonderful. I was saying that I hope that people will ALWAYS come forward to help. Sadly this doesn't always happen, a couple of years ago some friends of my son (they were 12 at the time) got mugged along Northfields Ave, in broad daylight, and not one of the adults watching did anything, and I know there are many similar stories, and yes I have stopped a mugging!!  I was trying to give you an example before!

Ben, a few people intervened, clearly not cowards.  However, a rush hour train would be packed with people, so, obviously there were many who did nothing (I'm alright Jacks).  Apologies if you had to read between the lines.

I don't know what your point is. Are you describing the people who intervened as the "I'm alright jack cowards"? You make it sound as those brave people couldn't have been trying hard enough since they were unable to prevent her phone being taken and he was able to escape? Do you think these brave people who jumped to the woman's rescue are really pleased with this outcome? Of course not.A terrible incident and I hope the woman is recovering from the shock of what happened on her normal commute home.

Yes really awful, and I do hope this lady is OK. In this climate of cuts I fear it may become common. I really do hope not, but can remember when things were really, really tight in the 80's, for the average person, but were financially easier than now and muggings happened all too often. Let's hope that these criminals are caught, let's also hope that more people will stop it from happening. I once witnessed some not so nice people enter a pub and begin almost immediately to hassle people and go through bags. The men (and some woman) customers calmly but with presence formed a semi circle round these thieves and 'guided' them out of the pub, without anything!
