Many thanks for all your comments. We went to his shop today and he was very very helpful. He diagnosed the problem as the speed control circuit board within a minute.

There are very few places that repair vacuum cleaners in our throwaway society (not a 'hobby horse' just an observation) and the chap at EDAS is VERY good (from experience of using his services) and a nice chap as well.
