Lido Junction Consultation (top of Northfield Avenue)

Lots of work has already been done on this by West Ealing Neighbours and there are old threads discussing this but the Consultation is still out there.  There is also an article going down the front page of this website.  This is such a dangerous and difficult junction for pedestrians to cross.http://www.ealing.gov.uk/news/article/245/give_your_views_on_the_lido_junctionand if you go through the piece on the Ealing Today website you'll also find other consultations you may not have known about.

General feeling was that good work has been done and progress made but that the problems have not all been sorted out.  The Council is proposing installing a single yellow line on the East side of Drayton Bridge Rd - so parking will be allowed after 7pm (after the rush hour).However, the meeting, although not wanting the proposed stop and shop bays on the West side, didn't get the full implication of this Council proposal  - which is that after 7pm there would be parking on both sides of the road!!  (People get paid good money to think up these proposals...)

Eric,No local Tory councillors are against this scheme.  Local councillors very much welcome this scheme and the safety benefits that it will bring. They wrote to the Gazette on 25th November to say as much. We are anxious though that this scheme will have a big impact on journey times north to south through the junction. Don’t misunderstand me. We do not think that this is more important than the potential safety benefit. It is not. But, we are keen that residents across the borough are aware of it.  Once the scheme is in the people who benefit will say no more but people queuing southbound will be fed up.  They will maybe be less fed up if they see the scheme coming and understand the trade-offs.  Hence we are keen that the consultation is wide and well advertised.

The Council should be able to provide a map of accidents in the area. I've an electronic map from my time as councillor showing accidents over a 3 year period, each accident marked by little triangle onto a map of the ward I represented. The triangles are coloured to distinguished between fatal, serious, slight and 'other' accidents. The map is produced by something called Ealing Geographic Information System.

Ealing Council says that the Lido Junction has 'the highest incidence'.. 'of collisions involving pedestrians in the entire borough.'The Council also says that collisions involving pedestrians at the Lido Junction are eight times the borough average of collisions involving pedestrians at junctions in the entire borough.Yes - the Lido Juncton is an accident blackspot.And finally for those of you who have yet to fill in your  postal questionnaires or are planning to fill in the online questionnare:In order to remove all parking on the very narrow Drayton Green Road (to improve north and south traffc flows) you need to write the following in 'Comments':'I don't want any parking/loading bays on the east side and the west side of Drayton Green Road from 7:00am to 7:00pm every day.'The deadline for sending in your questionnaire is that it must arrive by 16 December 2011.

While every accidental deth on our roads is a tragedy. There has, in fact, only been one fatality on the junction since 1999 (in 2002). There was a motorbike fatality further down Northfield Avenue in 2008.Source: http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-15975720Hardly an accident blackspot, but, I agree, in need of some attention.

Adam, I understand the three sets of lights in the north south route are to be co-ordinated so they work go go go and stop stop stop. Not the random arrangement we have now...stop go stop, stop stop go, go stop stop etc. this should improve flows. Also a sensor at the "Waitrose lights" was apparently faulty and interrupted the north south route even when no cars were attempting to leave Alexandria Road. So more gains there.

Adam,The fatality statistic came from Ealing Civic Society. So you should maybe ask them, or Ealing Council or TfL.West Ealing Neighours (WEN) is also unhappy with the proposed Pay and Display car parking and loading/delivery bay proposals on Drayton Green Road. The dentist, Candy Cars/Bagel shop and Cherrie Pie (ie all the Drayton Green Road businesses close to Lido Junction) were not asked about this prior to the consultation and do not want these parking/loading facilities.It's also important to note that Ealing Council Officers and the three local residents' groups who came up with the widely publicised proposals in 2006 did not ask for these car parking/loading bay spaces. Rumour has it that local Councillors requested these car parking/loading bay proposals.We have invited local Councillors to WEN's public meeting on Tuesday 6 December 7:30pm at OPEN Ealing (across the road from the Fire Station). Please come along to this meeting and make your views known and discuss them with Councillors and other local residents.

Eric, could you confirm in what time period these fatalities have happened in? I am not against making it safer for pedestrians, however their is a reason this junction has been left.It can not at present cope with the traffic needs to go through it.I live, walk, use buses and drive through this location daily so really not impressed. I look out onto Drayton Green road so see all the action. I am not looking forward to even more traffic jammed up Drayton Green Road causing more pollution.Nothing in the scheme deals with the issue of the junction can not provide left and right turns and allow everyone to use it. On top of this, the changes to the traffic management down Drayton Green Road which include moving the bus stop for the e7 and e10 even further away from where people want to get on it (which will cause more people to run and risk their life, in backed up traffic), the the installion of 5 pay parking bays on the wrong side of the road with a singe yelllow to 7pm only and a loading bay will only add to making Drayton Green road totally unpassable due to parking issues (eg people will be able to park on both sides after 7pm and the 30min loading bay is on the other side of the road to the other bus stop!)In its present format this scheme is only geared to providing pedestrian safety but dont worry if live in the area, or need to go anywhere because we've all be sitting in traffic breathing in more pollution.Of such, how can one support the scheme, if the people who have designed it clearly don't have a clue about the issues of the location?Adam

If you want to know the details of the proposals, West Ealing Neighbours (WEN) is running a public meeting on the topic at 7:30pm on Tuesday 6 December at Ealing OPEN (corner of Culmington Road and Uxbridge Road). The main thrust of the proposal is to make the junction much, much safer for pedestrians. Some local Tory Councillors are against the proposals as they feel it will slow the traffic down travelling south along Argyle Road. For them this is a more important consideration than pedestrian safety. For the record the Lido Junction has the worst accident record of any junction in Ealing and has been the scene of two fatalities.WEN itself is not happy with some aspects of the proposals either. Ealing Council will be invited to respond to questions and objections. Do come along and have your say.
